Why Samuel Hamilton From Netflix’s East Of Eden Looks So Familiar

Starring Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames, the Netflix adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel “East of Eden”features a top-notch supporting cast. This includes Ciarán Hinds, who portrayed quite a few memorable characters before taking on the role of farmer and patriarch Samuel Hamilton.

Boasting a prolific career in movies and TV spanning some 50 years, the Irish actor most notably played Julius Caesar in HBO’s acclaimed historical series “Rome.” Elsewhere, “Game of Thrones” fans will know Hinds as the wildling leader Mance Rayder from that show’s third, fourth, and fifth seasons. Prime Video’s “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” brought Hinds back to the fantasy genre to play the so-called “Dark Wizard” in Seasons 2 and 3, while “The Terror” saw him tackle horror as the ill-fated polar explorer Sir John Franklin. When it comes to Hinds’ big-screen roles, film buffs will recognize Hinds as the opera house manager Richard Firmin in 2004’s “The Phantom of the Opera,” as well as the Mossad agent Carl in Steven Spielberg’s 2005 political thriller “Munich.”

To date, Hinds’ most significant movie performance arguably remains that of Pop in “Belfast,” as the picture, which is set in his birthplace, earned him an Oscar nomination. In the way of film franchises, Hinds can be seen with an unusually long beard as Aberforth Dumbledore in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” Some might also recall Hinds’ other roles in widely celebrated films, such as Fletcher in “There Will Be Blood” and Roy Bland in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Four years before “East of Eden,” Hinds also appeared alongside Florence Pugh in the Netflix movie “The Wonder.”

One of Ciarán Hinds’ most appreciated roles was Julius Caesar in Rome

From Julius Caesar to Mance Rayder, Ciarán Hinds’ best-known TV characters have often been defined by their brilliance, imposing stature, and proximity to power. At the same time, Hinds never neglects the human side of the individuals he embodies. Relating to his portrayal of Caesar in “Rome,” which he has to thank for his mainstream success, Hinds made a point to display the real-life Roman dictator’s interiority when necessary. “It wasn’t just about showing him as a great leader,” Hinds told MovieMaker Magazine in 2025. “He’s human like anyone else, but he has to hide it for fear of it being used against him.”

Hinds only played Caesar in “Rome” Season 1, outside of briefly appearing as his corpse in Season 2. Sadly, the show itself didn’t last much longer: Unable to resonate with the masses and justify its high budget in the minds of HBO executives, “Rome” was canceled after just two seasons – despite leaving much more story to tell. “By the time people discovered it, it was too late,” Hinds explained. “But it paved the way for shows like ‘Game of Thrones,’ as [‘Rome’ executive producer] Frank Doelger set up that show as well.”

Hinds added “Game of Thrones” to his impressive résumé eight years after starring in “Rome.” Now, with Netflix’s “East of Eden,” the actor has another high-profile TV role under his belt.
