With Starfleet, sometimes you have to get your hands — and face, if you’re Ensign Brad Boimler (voiced by Jack Quaid) — dirty.
As part of the Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Star Trek: Lower Decks released the official trailer and new character portraits for Season 3 (premiering August 25 on Paramount+). The animated series will challenge the U.S.S. Cerritos ensigns in (hilarious) ways they could never imagine, starting with a shocking resolution for Season 2’s epic cliffhanger finale.
As you’ll recall, the season ended with Captain Carol Freeman’s (voiced by Dawnn Lewis) arrest. Now, she’ll be standing trial. And when Ensign Tendi (voiced by Noël Wells) wonders how the captain’s daughter is taking it, Ensign Beckett Mariner (voiced by Tawny Newsome), perfectly timed, exclaims, “oh, I’m taking it, taking it to the limit!”
Elsewhere in the trailer, Mariner and Boimler try to sell the “warp 10 excitement” of Starfleet at a fair, there’s an unauthorized launch, the search for justice, adventure, and wonder, and much more craziness from the animated series. Plus, you don’t want to miss where they end up at the end of the trailer. Watch it above.
The Starfleet crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S. Cerritos includes Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Ensign Rutherford, voiced by Eugene Cordero. The Starfleet characters that comprise the U.S.S. Cerritos’ bridge crew include Captain Carol Freeman, Commander Jack Ransom, voiced by Jerry O’Connell, and Doctor T’Ana, voiced by Gillian Vigman.
Star Trek: Lower Decks is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions (CBS Studios’ animation arm), Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout’s Alex Kurtzman, Roddenberry Entertainment’s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth, Katie Krentz (219 Productions), and Heather Kadin serve as executive producers alongside creator and showrunner Mike McMahan. Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout), who brought McMahan to the project, also serves as an executive producer. Titmouse, the Emmy Award-winning independent animation production company, serves as the animation studio for the series.
