Oscar-nominated James Caan has died at the age of 82.
Caan’s family posted the news on his Twitter on July 7. “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,” the tweet reads.

Caan was best known for playing Sonny in the 1972 film The Godfather. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1973 for the role. He was also nominated for an Emmy in 1972 for Outstanding Single Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for playing Brian Piccolo in Brian’s Song. He was nominated for four Golden Globes: Most Promising Newcomer — Male in 1996 for The Glory Guys, Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture in 1973 for The Godfather, Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama in 1975 for The Gambler, and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical in 1976 for Funny Lady.
With over 100 credits to his name, Caan’s TV roles, in addition to the TV movie Brian’s Song, included Back in the Game, Magic City, and Las Vegas, as well as guest spots on Hawaii Five-0 (with his son Scott Caan), Family Guy, The Simpsons, Crossing Jordan, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and more. On the film side, in addition to The Godfather, he starred in Thief, Misery, Rollerball, Elf, and others.
