Here are the best new melodic death metal albums of the last 10 years, chosen by guitarist Markus Vanhala of Omnium Gatherum and Insomnium.
Earlier this year, Insomnium released their new album, Anno 1696 and Omnium Gatherum now have a new EP, Slasher, which means Vanhala has been a pretty busy man. Right after going on a North American tour with Omnium Gatherum, he basically got off one tour bus and hopped on another, linking up with Insomnium for another run through the continent.
Amazingly, he found the time to school headbangers in the very best in melodeath over the last decade. He already selected the genre’s best albums during this span and he’s back with his selections for newly-reigning melodic death metal albums.
Vanhala is the last remaining founding member of Omnium Gatherum, who formed in 1996 and released their debut record, Spirits and August Light, in 2003. While keeping output on this front steady over the last 20 years, he’s been showcasing a different side of his melodic death metal vision with Insomnium since 2011.
So when Vanhala talks about melodeath, you’d be wise to listen! He’s one of the scene’s most trusted leaders, evidenced by his selections further down the page.
