The Barbie Dream Fest was billed as the ultimate “Barbie fan weekend,” promising attendees “interactive experiences,” “unique programming,” a “star-studded panel,” and other “unforgettable experiences.” But after the first two days of the event at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, some attendees who paid up to $450 for tickets have likened it to Fyre Fest and the viral Willy Wonka “immersive experience” from 2024.
It’s easy to see why: videos and photos posted to social media capture a huge convention center filled with a only a few Barbie-related vendors, a small rolling skating rink, an interactive Barbie Dreamhouse that turned out to merely be a backdrop with fake grass, and a swag bag with hand sanitizer.
“This event sucks. Barely any vendors or activities. The ’80’s roller disco’ is a 20×40 foot square of concrete in the middle of the marketplace with no decorations or anything to make it special,” one reddit wrote. “i attended a careers expo that was more exciting than this hot mess,” added another redditor. “This is Glasgow Willy Wonka all over again lmao,” joked another.

The TikTok account hellhotelshow posted a video called “we paid $250 per pass Barbie dreamfast is a nightmare,” which offered a tour of the event space. “is this Fyrefest yet??? Dashcon???” read the accompanying caption. “Barbie Dream Fest was a nightmare fest. Worst event ever,” declared TikToker rainbowdollmom in her own video.
Following the criticism, organizers apparently made some enhancements to the space, including adding a disco ball above the roller rink and a Barbie balloon in front of the Dream house.
