From leading a historic basketball program to embracing the joys of motherhood, Kim Caldwell’s journey has taken an exciting turn. The Tennessee Lady Vols coach and her husband, Justin Caldwell, recently welcomed their first child, Conor Scott Caldwell. Balancing a stellar coaching career with this personal milestone, Caldwell’s story inspires fans and working mothers alike.

Let’s explore her professional achievements, the Lady Vols’ current season, and how Caldwell is redefining success on and off the court.

Tennessee women’s basketball coach Kim Caldwell recently gave birth to her first child, Conor Scott Caldwell, and subsequently missed the Lady Vols’ matchup against No. 7 Texas. According to the school, both Caldwell and her son are “doing well.” In Thursday’s game, assistant coach Jenna Burdette stepped in as acting head coach for the No. 17 Lady Vols.

The Lady Vols suffered a narrow 80-76 loss to Texas, dropping their record to 15-4 overall. Notably, Tennessee’s four losses this season have come by a total of just eight points, including three against ranked opponents. The Lady Vols boast a high-octane offense, leading with 94.3 points per game. They also rank first in both three-point attempts and makes.

The 36-year-old coach joined Tennessee in April 2024 after a successful season at Marshall. There, she led the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997. Her career includes a remarkable 217-31 coaching record. Caldwell’s impressive résumé has set high expectations for her first season leading a historic women’s college basketball program.

Despite her absence, Caldwell emphasized her commitment to balancing career and motherhood, a challenge she believes can inspire others. “I have an opportunity here to help the next person that is going to get pregnant during basketball season,” she recently shared, underlining her efforts to normalize these dual responsibilities. Tennessee’s next challenge will come against No. 2 South Carolina on Monday, a highly anticipated home game in Knoxville.
