DC fans who watched Clayface have expressed interest in a potential sequel, which includes an iconic superhero. Clayface follows the origin story of rising actor Matt Hagen, who becomes the Batman villain. While the film doesn’t feature Batman, many fans have expressed their desire to see Hagen fight the Dark Knight in a potential Clayface 2.
Some viewers of the DCU film have enjoyed Hagen’s descent into madness. While the marketing hid Clayface’s real form, fans are now hoping to see him unleash his full powers against the Dark Knight. X User PhoenxTNT said it featured a “fun use of powers” and wished to see him fight Batman in a future movie. Other fans joined them in wanting the same thing in the DCU’s future.
Clayface introduces audiences to the DCU’s Gotham City for the first time. The character previously appeared in Creature Commandos, although Tom Rhys Harries did not voice him in the animated series.
How are critics and DC fans responding to the new Clayface movie?
Clayface currently has an impressive 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Both critics and audiences have praised Tom Rhys Harries’ performance as Matt Hagen. The reviews have also applauded the film’s effective use of body horror elements, with some critics comparing Harries to Demi Moore’s Oscar-nominated role in The Substance. Some reviews also noted the film is similar to David Cronenberg’s The Fly and Sam Raimi’s Darkman.
Following positive reviews, Clayface’s box office tracking has also improved, with it projected to gross between $25 million and $35 million in its opening weekend. Besides Harries, Clayface stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, and Ruby Sear. It is DC Studios’ first R-rated theatrical film, directed by James Watkins, and based on a script by Mike Flanagan. The film will be followed by Man of Tomorrow next year.
While DC Studios has yet to announce any plans for a sequel, it has teased Clayface’s future in the DCU.
