Netflix is bringing a widely popular TV show for another season. The streamer has renewed the new comedy for Season 2 just eight days after its first season premiered on September 24.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the renewal of A Different World follows a strong debut for the 10-episode series. Created by Felicia Pride, the show continues the story of Hillman College, the fictional historically Black college at the center of the original NBC sitcom.
The new series follows Deborah, played by Maleah Joi Moon, as she begins college while carrying the legacy of her parents, Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison reprise their roles from the original series, which ran from 1987 to 1993.
Deborah’s parents met at Hillman before eventually marrying and starting a family. The new series gives their daughter her own story as she begins life on the same campus.
What was the first season of Netflix’s A Different World about?
The first season follows 18-year-old Deborah as she adjusts to life as a freshman at Hillman College. She has to build her own identity while dealing with the expectations that come with being the daughter of two well-known former students.
Deborah experiences challenges in the first year involving academics, friendships, and campus life. She also develops relationships with her new classmates while trying to navigate her studies and find her place at Hillman.
The series continues the original show’s focus on college life while introducing a new generation of students with contemporary themes. Alongside Guy and Hardison, the first season also brought back several beloved performers from the original series, including Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson and Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks.
Netflix has not announced a release date or episode count for the second season.
