James Gunn on Why Dance Opening Changes as Season 2 Goes On

James Gunn has explained why the opening dance sequence featured in Peacemaker Season 2 slightly changes in some episodes.

The first four episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 are now available to stream on HBO Max. Created by Gunn, the DCU show sees John Cena reprise his role as Chris Smith/Peacemaker, while Danielle Brooks and Freddie Stroma star as Leota Adebayo and Adrian Chase/Vigilante.

What did James Gunn say about the Peacemaker Season 2 intro changing?

With new episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 dropping every Thursday, some DC Studios fans have noticed that the intro sequence, a dance number set to the tune of Foxy Shazam’s “Oh Lord,” slightly changes in each episode.

On Threads, Gunn confirmed this was the case, saying that “every episode the edits (edited by @fredraskin) are subtly different.” A specific example of this is how Michael Rooker has been in the intro each week, but it wasn’t until Episode 4 that the show cuts to his single.

When asked what the reason for the changes was, Gunn said, “Many episodes are different to focus on different characters.”

Rooker plays Red St. Wild in Peacemaker Season 2, while the cast of the show further includes Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith/Blue Dragon, David Denman as Keith Smith/Captain Triumph, Sol Rodríguez as Sasha Bordeaux, Tim Meadows as Langston Fleury, and Nhut Le as Judomaster.

A description of the show reads, “Peacemaker explores the continuing story of the character that series star John Cena reprises in the aftermath of executive producer James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it! Delving into current world issues through the lens of superhero/supervillain/world’s biggest douchebag, the series extends the world created for The Suicide Squad while bringing to life the soul and wit of Peacemaker and the team.”

The Peacemaker Season 2 finale will drop on HBO Max on October 9, 2025.
