James Gunn has dropped a bombshell message about the recent Batman Easter egg in Lanterns. The Dark Knight’s mention in the DCU series has sparked discussion among fans online.
Lanterns Season 1, Episode 6, “Bad Optics,” sparked discussion among DCU fans with an Easter Egg about Batman. At one point during the episode, Guy Gardner installs a Green Lantern beacon in Rushville, a design reminiscent of the iconic Bat-Signal. Noting the similarity, Hal jokes that Guy “ripped off that bat guy over in Gotham.”
The line led some fans to question whether Batman is already existing within Gunn’s DCU. However, one fan on Threads reminded the fandom that the Caped Crusader has already made an appearance in the DCU, sharing a screenshot of the hero in Creature Commandos.
Gunn agreed with the fan and replied with a simple pointing-up emoji to the fan’s post. His response reinforces the fact that Batman already exists in the DCU, something Gunn previously confirmed. Batman has already been active in the DCU for a while.
What was Batman’s role in Creature Commandos?
Batman made his debut in the DCU during a cameo in Episode 6 of Creature Commandos, titled “Priyatel Skelet.” During the episode, his silhouette appears on the roof as he crashes Phosphorus’ party at the Ice Lounge. He had previously made subtle appearances in the fourth episode in Circe’s vision of the future.
In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes at the time, Gunn confirmed that his decision to include Batman was to show that he “already exists in this universe.” He continued, “Just like when we come to the Superman movie, we see that Superman already exists. He’s already known by the people in Metropolis.”
Gunn added, “We don’t need to hear the origin story again. That’s just a way to introduce that Batman is a part of this universe. He’s an important part of this universe, and he has an impact on it, including defeating such pretty dangerous, scary people like Phosphorus.”
Meanwhile, Lanterns Episode 7 is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
