Hideo Kojima has weighed in on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, offering high praise for the filmmaker’s latest feature. The acclaimed game creator shared his thoughts in a detailed social media post, describing the film as “magnificent.” His review arrives ahead of The Odyssey’s theatrical release in Japan next month.

Hideo Kojima has publicly shared his reaction to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, giving praise to the director’s latest feature ahead of its release in Japan. The Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator highlighted both the storytelling and the immersive experience of watching it in 70mm IMAX.
Kojima posted his review on X after attending a 70mm IMAX screening at the David Geffen Theater. Recalling the experience, he wrote, “No, rather than saying I ‘watched’ the screen, it felt like I was there the whole time! A sensation of ‘witnessing it!’” He added that the screening reminded him of seeing Cinerama films as a child, saying it brought back memories of discovering a completely new level of immersion.
Kojima explained, “The lack of Japanese subtitles might have been a good thing, too,” before adding, “this was a whole different bodily experience.” He continued, “For me, it was truly an unprecedented, unexperienced Odyssey.”
The game creator praised the film’s use of the 1.43:1 IMAX frame, writing that it “drew endlessly close to the actors’ expressions, capturing their emotions deeply with shallow ‘depth of field,’ then switching to fine details with ‘pull focus,’ relentlessly pursuing their anguish and fate.” Kojima also commended “the tour de force performances by a luxurious cast.”
He concluded by describing the film as “magnificent,” adding that he will see The Odyssey again when it opens in Japan next month. Nolan’s The Odyssey was released on July 17, 2026.
