Alex Gibney‘s blistering new documentary on Elon Musk has received its first trailer today. The movie preview arrived after the business tycoon’s legal team issued the filmmakers a formal legal notice, and the release date was moved up.
Titled Musk, the documentary premiered at the Venice Film Festival and received a four-minute standing ovation, with strong reception. The official synopsis reads, “An incisive look behind the legend of Elon Musk, the world’s most heralded “inventor-entrepreneur” who has enormous influence on the world in which we all live.”

How Musk examines the tech billionaire’s rise to global influence
The nearly four-hour feature traces Elon Musk’s path from a Silicon Valley entrepreneur in the early 2000s to the world’s richest person, weaving together his public ambitions and personal life. Alex Gibney follows Musk through Tesla, SpaceX, and his 2022 acquisition of Twitter, later renamed X. It also looks at his relationship with Donald Trump and his role in the Department of Government Efficiency.
The movie features interviews with several people who have crossed paths with the tech mogul. Its listed participants include Justine Musk, Ashley St. Clair, Kara Swisher, Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard, journalist Zoë Schiffer, and AI researcher Geoffrey Hinton. The 55-year-old did not participate in the film. Instead, Gibney uses a CGI avatar of Musk with AI voice syncing to recreate an interview using statements he has made publicly.
Universal Pictures also received backlash for dropping its plans to release the documentary worldwide. The distributor ultimately retained its international plans.
At the time of writing, the movie holds a 100% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 20 reviews.
Musk will release in New York and Los Angeles on October 9, followed by a nationwide release on October 16, 2026, by Bleecker Street. The movie will arrive on HBO in the first quarter of 2027.
