British-Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari has finally shared a new exciting update for the upcoming Cloverfield sequel, which has been in-development since 2018. This comes after nearly two decades since the sci-fi horror franchise had begun with the theatrical release of the Matt Reeves-directed first installment.
What did Babak Anvari say about the Cloverfield sequel?
During a recent interview, Anvari discussed the current status of the Cloverfield sequel, confirming that the long-in-development project is still moving forward at Paramount Pictures. Although he can’t really divulge major details about the sequel, he did express his “high” excitement for the monster horror movie.
“You know everyone on that team, they’re very secretive, which I understand,” Arvari said. “Whatever happens, just know that hopefully you’re going to get something amazing.”
Anvari has been attached to helm the project since 2022, with Joe Barton writing the screenplay. Anvari is no stranger to the horror genre, after previously directing 2016’s Persian-language psychological thriller Under the Shadow, and 2019’s Dakota Johnson-led psychological horror Wounds. Further details about the plot and characters are still under wraps, but it won’t follow the found-footage format of the first installment. The direct sequel is being produced by J.J. Abrams, Hannah Minghella, and Jon Cohen.
The original 2008 movie was directed by Reeves from a screenplay written by Drew Goddard. The story revolved around a group of young New Yorkers who must find a way to escape the city, after a massive monster suddenly appears and goes on a rampage along with other smaller creatures. The cast included Michael Stahl-David, Odette Yustman, Mike Vogel, Jessica Lucas, Lizzy Caplan, Ben Feldman, and more. It currently holds a Certified Fresh rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 214 reviews. Due to its critical and commercial success, the first installment was followed by two standalone sequels in 2016 and 2018.
