Verity, the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, opened at No. 1 domestically and surpassed industry projections, giving Amazon MGM Studios a strong return on its $40 million investment. The movie is led by Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.
The Colleen Hoover adaptation exceeds expectations in its worldwide opening
The erotic psychological thriller collected $32.6 million from 3,510 North American theaters and $62.5 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo).
The Colleen Hoover adaptation ranks as the second-best global launch among films based on her books, behind only 2024’s It Ends With Us at $95.6 million. Verity outpaced Hoover’s Regretting You ($23.6 million) and Reminders of Him ($28.1 million) in worldwide debuts. Domestically, it landed below It Ends With Us but well above both titles.
Anne Hathaway plays acclaimed author Verity Crawford, while Johnson portrays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to ghostwrite Crawford’s remaining books. Michael Showalter directed the $40 million production.
Overseas, Verity claimed No. 1 in several markets, including the UK ($4.5 million), Brazil ($3.8 million), Australia ($3.1 million), Germany ($3.8 million) and Norway ($400,000). Amazon’s international offices reported the film pulled in male viewers and non-readers of the novel, not just the author’s established fanbase. After all, audiences turned out heavily female at 78 percent, with 38 percent of ticket buyers aged 25 to 34.
The weekend could generate roughly $100 million domestically, according to Rentrak, up about 16 percent year over year, via THR. The 2026 domestic box office will hit an estimated $7.95 billion on Sunday, making a 19 percent gain over the same point in 2025.
Reviews proved far less warm than box office returns. The movie got a C+ CinemaScore and holds a 34 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating. Digger, a Tom Cruise-led satire from Alejandro Iñárritu, scored the same CinemaScore but managed only $8 million domestically and $20 million worldwide on a $160 million net budget.
Verity opens next in Taiwan and the CIS region, with Korea (October 22) and Japan (November 6) still to come. So, Anne Hathaway’s movie still has a chance to continue the streak at the box office.
