Selena Gomez broke her silence after some commenters accused her of subtly insulting her ex Justin Bieber’s wife Hailey Bieber…by posting a silent skincare tutorial TikTok. Some fans believed that because Hailey regularly posts skincare videos on her TikTok (as Hailey is launching a skincare line, Rhode), Gomez’s video was mocking her posts, despite Gomez innocently just showing her fans her own routine and products she uses. There was no mention of Hailey or anyone else in the video.

Gomez disabled comments on the video and publicly apologized for the perceived slight in a TikTok comment while also expressing her confusion over it. “This is why I believe in taking care of your mental health,” Gomez wrote, in a screenshot Selena Gomez fan account GomezSource shared. “Guys no idea what I did but I really am sorry. Zero bad intention. Deleting soon.”

Gomez defended Hailey in the past when her own fans attacked Hailey. It was October 2019, and Hailey sparked controversy when she posted an Instagram Story of herself listening to Summer Walker’s “I’ll Kill You” minutes after Gomez released “Lose You to Love Me,” one of her big Justin Bieber breakup songs.
Gomez didn’t mention Hailey explicitly or need to in order to make her point. “I am grateful for the response that the song is getting. I’m so grateful,” she started. “However, I do not stand for women tearing women down. And I will never, ever be by that. So please be kind to everyone. It doesn’t matter what the situation is. If you’re my fans, don’t be rude to anybody, please. Don’t go off and say things that you just feel in the moment. And just please, from me, know that that’s not my heart. My heart is only to release things that I feel that are me and that I’m proud of. And that’s all that I’ll say, yeah.”
She added later, “Again, please be kind. Please, please, please be kind. I don’t like seeing people being disrespectful or rude to other people, so please don’t do that.”
Hailey recently posted her own TikTok asking fans to stop pitting her and Selena against each other. Hailey said, “Leave me alone at this point. I’m minding my business. I don’t do anything. I don’t say anything. Leave me alone, please. Enough time has gone by where it’s valid to leave me alone. I beg of you, truly. That’s my only request. Leave me alone. Be miserable somewhere else, please.”
Hailey is seemingly referring to Jelena fans who compare her to Gomez, even though Gomez and Justin ended their relationship for good in spring 2018 after a tumultuous on-off 10-year romance. Justin began dating Hailey again in June 2018 before they got married in September 2018.
In December 2020, a source told Entertainment Tonight that Gomez, Hailey, and Justin are all sick of the fan discourse about them.
“Selena, Justin and Hailey are all tired of the Selena vs. Hailey narrative at this point,” the source said. “It’s exhausting for everyone, and they just want people to move on so they can move on too and not focus on any further negativity or past situations.”
