“I’ve always loved dressing for the stage,” Maggie Rogers tells ELLE.com. “There’s so much playfulness and movement—it’s such a creative place to think about texture and ways it can amplify the music.” Though the singer didn’t technically perform at Ralph Lauren’s spring 2023 show last night, she did put on a sartorial show of sorts. Dressed in a black three-piece suit by the designer, Rogers attended the highly anticipated collection reveal at The Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California with her BFF and college roommate in tow—but not before getting ready with some loud music (courtesy of Fred Again and Run The Jewels) and help from her glam squad, makeup artist Karo Kangas and stylist Kat Typaldos.
When it comes to red carpet appearances, Rogers admits she still gets nervous; but, like performing onstage, she thoroughly enjoys “bringing that creativity to life in a more elevated way.” It doesn’t hurt to wear something especially fabulous, either. “I feel so confident in this full suit,” she adds. “It feels classic, elegant, and timeless.” Growing up, Rogers was always “really specific about clothes” and focused on the details. “Whether it was the sock I was wearing or the shirt, it had to feel just right,” she says. She cites Amanda Bynes in What a Girl Wants as her main style inspiration, for the way her character in the 2003 cult classic mixes vintage finds with designer pieces. “I want my clothes to feel like they serve a moment or purpose.” They definitely did this time.

I’ve loved Ralph Lauren for so long—I can’t wait for the show tonight.
I chose a classic suit look that feels very powerful, timeless, and chic.
Talking shit/spilling tea with Karo.
My makeup look is simple skin with a glam dramatic eye.
Someone definitely pre-tied this tie for me…
Working on that pose, I suppose. Red carpets will always make me nervous, but mirror practice always helps.
Before last looks, we test the makeup with a flash on a camera to see how it’ll look on the carpet.
Kat with the final touch and I’m on my way!
