Karl Lagerfeld, You Would’ve Hated Irina Shayk’s Met Gala Afterparty

You can’t know everything about a person just by looking at them. But according to the late Karl Lagerfeld, wearing a pair of sweatpants can tell you most everything you need. In reference to the designer’s infamous contempt for loungewear, Irina Shayk attended the Met Gala afterparty in a pair of gray drawstring sweatpants. She styled the dressed-down look with a simple white scoop-neck tank top, a layered Ana Khouri necklace, and crystallized Jimmy Choo x Timberland stiletto boots, holding a burgundy Alpha Industries MA-1 bomber jacket in her hand as she walked down the street.

“Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants,” Lagerfeld wrote in his book “The World According to Karl.” But with all her glamorous accessories, Shayk looked far from defeated. While it’s very feasible that Shayk wore sweatpants with nothing but comfort in mind, given that the theme of this year’s Met Gala was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” it’s quite likely her outfit was intended as a subtle nod (and maybe even a respectful challenge) to one of Lagerfeld’s more controversial quotes.

At the Met Gala itself, Shayk dressed to impress, wearing an ivory gown by Yohji Yamamoto featuring folded rosettes and twisted straps. “I am honored to wear this masterpiece tonight for Met Gala,” she wrote on Instagram, sharing that the dress was actually an archival design from 1998. But while her red carpet look was stunning, her gray sweatpants ultimately ended up stealing the show. See Shayk’s unconventional tribute to Lagerfeld at the Met Gala afterparty ahead.
