The New Workforce Reality by Chioma Chelsea N. Oleka-Onyewuchi
What’s it About?
The book is designed as a comprehensive roadmap to help businesses and employees tap into potential synergies of the different generations and maximize their effectiveness.
I know a company owner who has been running a successful business for the past five years — and has yet to meet at least half of her staff in person. How do they take their coffee, she wonders, or what do they eat for lunch? What are their daily quirks and tendencies? Couldn’t we take our business to another level if we were all working together — RIGHT HERE?
This owner yearns for the days when her entire workforce would come to the office, collaborate, communicate, brainstorm, do productive things and make exciting decisions — all while looking each other in the eye.
Those days are over, a product of massive changes in today’s workforce, the proliferation of new technologies, and the aftermath of a worldwide pandemic that forced businesses — and the people who work for them — to rethink what’s practical, possible and desirable.
There’s another dynamic of the modern workforce: the fact that it is made up of people from different generations, requiring teams to understand the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities inherent in each age group.
Chioma Chelsea N. Oleka-Onyewuchi is a Talent Management Regeneration Strategist who has come along with the right book at the right time: The New Workforce Reality: Embracing Intergenerational Collaboration That Thrives in the Age of Automation and Layoffs.
Roadmap to Maximize Effectiveness
The book is designed as a comprehensive roadmap to help businesses and employees tap into potential synergies of the different generations and maximize their effectiveness. Readers will be able to acquire practical strategies, insights and tools to navigate the evolving landscape, optimize their skillsets, and thrive in their careers.
“While some companies have successfully harnessed the strengths of different generations and fostered effective collaboration, others still face challenges,” says Oleka-Onyewuchi. “Success largely depends on the organization’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment that values diverse perspectives, promotes knowledge sharing, and encourages collaboration.”
The author provides a detailed overview of each generation, as well as a SWOT analysis, to understand their tendencies — basically, everything about them that will guide managers. She then makes comparisons of generation vs. generation in order to get a better understanding of how they can prosper together. She even provides examples of prominent business leaders from each generation and shows how their stories embraced the necessary elements to achieve greatness.
While the book offers a very granular study of the makeup of each generation, it also suggests a number of commonalities that managers must recognize in dealing with a multigenerational workforce. For example, managers must be flexible and not be solely guided by data — there’s a human element that can’t be overlooked.
The book also advises managers to encourage cross-collaboration between different generation employees in order to leverage the strengths of each.
Bridging Generational Divides
Perhaps most importantly, managers must dispel generational stereotypes. While the book presents a plethora of information, managers would do well to acknowledge that you can’t fit an entire generation into a neat package and assume that generational tendencies are necessarily true of each generation member. Approach employees with an open mind.
The New Workforce Reality was written specifically to help bridge generational divides and promote collaboration, harmony and optimum productivity across multigenerational teams. It offers a wealth of information, insights and ideas to minimize misunderstandings and differing opinions and perspectives that are commonplace in any working environment but so crucial to be aware of as a new picture of today’s workforce emerges.
Readers are encouraged to consider this book as an important first step in taking organizations to the next level with a team of employees as diverse as their ages and experience levels and as united in their drives for success.
