What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Kep Westguard: The Second Battle of Saratoga?
I’m a mom to two boys who loved when I’d drop them into history during bedtime stories, whether they were parachuting behind enemy lines in WWII or caught in the middle of a ship battle. Eventually, they got too old for bedtime stories, but I wasn’t ready to let go of the adventures. That’s when I started writing the Kep Westguard series.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Kep Westguard: The Second Battle of Saratoga, what would they be?
Definitely the original Rocky theme song. Just like Rocky, America in the Revolution was the underdog, up against the greatest army in the world. It’s all about grit, determination, and fighting for something bigger than yourself.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love mysteries and adventures, and the Kep Westguard books are always a mix of both.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Mostly research for future Kep Westguard adventures. At the moment, I’m studying the Battle of Valcour Island.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I loved the moment when TJ decides to take Benedict Arnold’s place in battle using a death mask. It was such an ingenious solution. The time-travel team has to live by its wits. TJ’s creativity and boldness really shine, and it shows how resourceful the kids have to be to survive and succeed.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I must write in a crowded place, like a coffee shop. I love the energy of people around me—even though I’ve got headphones in. Back in law school, I always studied at a busy bagel shop. That background buzz just fuels me.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Freedom doesn’t—and didn’t—come free. I try to honor and appreciate all the sacrifices that were made to create a free country.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I hope readers come away appreciating the hardships and sacrifices that shaped our country, but also the incredible resilience of the people who lived through them. I want them to realize that we carry that same resilience today. Hard times can make us stronger.
