What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Disunion: The Mantiz Gambit?
I was doing some reading on the U.S. Civil War, and I imagined what that might be like, and how it might turn out, if it had happened in space rather than on a continent.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
As a reader, I enjoy science fiction, suspense, fantasy, and general action stories. As I writer, I enjoy sci-fi and action very much!
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
That pile always included non-fiction as well. I just started Renegade, the first book in The Spiral Wars; I have also WEIRD, Milk (the history of milk), and a new book by Martha Wells.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
There’s a hand-to-hand fight sequence between three protagonists and one alien bodyguard toward the end of the story. I’m a martial artist, so that fight scene is my favorite moment in the book!
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Nothing weird, but I do often take a break just before a big, important scene. It’s sort of an intellectual gathering of my breath.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Nothing is as good as it sounds or as bad as it seems.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Generally, I hope they have a sense of time well spent. Specifically, I’d like them to feel that the characters were all imbued with life.
