What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Spare Parts?
I worked as a janitor in an old hospital that was built into a mountain. During my four year tenure there I listened to stories about how humans swore the place was haunted. I thought, “what if it was” one day and the story just kind of unfolded in front of me.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Spare Parts, what would they be?
The Doctor: Vampira by The Misfits. Alessia: Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen. Simon: Enter For (Your Chance To Win Pt. 1) by Ol’ School Johnny.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I primarily write in the horror/fantasy genre, but my current favourite genre to read is Sci-Fi.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
“The Murderbot Diaries” by Martha Wells, and “More Than Human” by Theodore Sturgeon.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I had a blast writing the Nutritionist chapter. She was a background character that was talked about, but never seen, for the majority of the book. When it was time to give her the light to shine, it allowed me to get into the meat and bones of her story, and the hauntings that surrounded the hospital.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Nothing really. I do my best writing when the sun is on the far side of noon, but other than that, nah. I guess my quirky habit, much like all other writers, is convincing myself to put pen to paper, fingers to keyboard, etc etc.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I’m kind of a nihilist, so it would be, “That’s life, man. Have fun because it’s all you get.”
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
That there will be a sequel coming within the next two years. There are some characters who feel like their story is unfinished, and that’s because it is.
