Her award-winning and bestselling Outlander series has extended far beyond the pages. It is one of the hottest books-to-screen TV series ever. It wouldn’t be crazy to say she is indirectly responsible for a spurt in travel to Scotland. And how many authors can say their fans attend gatherings and conventions dressed up as her characters?
She’s Diana Gabaldon, one of the headliners at the upcoming Santa Fe International Literary Festival, and BookTrib had the chance this week to go one on one with her discussing everything from the success of her series, what’s in store for Book Ten, what she’ll be doing in Santa Fe and getting a sense of who she is on a personal level.
The Santa Fe International Literary Festival will take place May 19-21, bringing together world-renowned authors, thinkers and passionate readers for a long weekend of big-stage presentations and intimate conversations with literary heroes from near and far to celebrate the power of story.
Rich in cultural diversity and creativity, Santa Fe is home to this three-day international festival. Authors will explore issues at a time of extraordinary change — in politics, race, immigration, the environment, sustainability and more — as well as offer good old-fashioned storytelling with the deepest hope to send festival-goers back into the world inspired.
With more than 30 different events, SFILF is headquartered downtown at the Santa Fe Convention Center. Kicking off Friday evening, May 19, 2023, with the celebrated Irish author, Colum McCann, the festival will then host an entire long weekend of programming, including large and small author talks and conversations. Some of the featured authors include Jennifer Egan, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Visit From the Good Squad & The Candy House; John Irving, legendary author of The World According to Garp and The Cider House Rules; Santa Fe’s ownMichael McGarrity, the author of the New York Times bestselling Kevin Kerney crime novels; Beth Macy, celebrated journalist and author of Dopesick and Raising Lazarus; and Denise Chavez, Fronteriza writer and activist, New Mexico Treasure and author of King and Queen of Comezon.
This year the Festival has added International to its name. This shift represents the desire to reflect the vast diversity of the world’s literary community. This year it will have an impressive list of international names: Luis Alberto Urrea, born in Mexico, is the acclaimed author of the Devil’s Highway and soon to be released Good Night, Irene; Laila Lalami, author of The Moor’s Account and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize is is Moroccan; Ingrid Rojas Contreras author of The Man Who Could Move Clouds and a National Book Award finalist this year, is coming from her home in Bogota, Columbia; from Zambia, Harvard professor, and author of the award winning books The Old Drift and The Furrows, Namwali Serpell; Ed Yong, born in Malaysia is a Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer and is author of An Immense World. Irishman Colum McCann is the National Book Award-winning author of Let the Great World Spin and Apeirogon and will open the Festival on Friday the 19th of May.
