Point Blank by Bob Dylan
“Point Blank (Quick Studies) is an affordable way to own some of his representative drawings and a must have for Bob Dylan fanatics.”
The enigmatic Bob Dylan was born in 1941, moved to New York City in January, 1961, began playing Greenwich Village clubs the following month and was quickly signed to Columbia Records releasing his debut album Bob Dylan in March, 1961. He embarked on his first concert tour in 1964 lasting from February 1 to December 7. With the exception of a seven year hiatus following a horrific motorcycle accident in 1966, he has semi-permanently been on the road. Since June 7, 1988, Dylan and his band have traveled the world on what media and fans affectionately call The Never Ending Tour with over 3700 performances to-date. Various legs of these tours have been given different names by the artist.
On the Road, On the Page: A Restless Creative Life
Bob Dylan is also a consummate versatile multi-media artist who has made time to draw, paint and sculpt since 1960. Rapidly executed sketches later become finished studio paintings; vibrant, visual memories of the world he sees around him. His work has been exhibited in several major art galleries and museums since 1994 and published in ten books of paintings and drawings. The Modern Art Museum in Shanghai hosted Retrospectrum, the first comprehensive exhibition of his artworks from September 28, 2019-January 5, 2020 which attracted over 100,000 international visitors. It featured more than 250 of his works including paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolor, drawings in ink, pastel and charcoal as well as iron sculptures spanning five decades of his output as a visual artist.
Halcyon Gallery at 148 New Bond Street in London staged his most recent solo exhibition from May 9-July 6, 2025. Their brochure stated: “The works have been transformed with paint into vivid reflections of people, places, and everyday moments. The exhibition unveils his latest series that demonstrate Dylan’s sensibility for storytelling. These new paintings read like a glimpse into his visual journey; they are a masterful expression of a dynamic imagination, emphasized via the eclectic swathe of subjects depicted.”
Dylan’s Visual Voice
The Point Blank drawings were spontaneously created while Bob Dylan travelled the globe on tour between 2021-2022 depicting intriguing characters, interiors and exteriors of various buildings, still lifes and landscapes. Several boxers are included and roughly an equal number of men and women. Like the drawings, this treasure of a book is stark, spare, unadorned sans book jacket with a gray and black cover. The drawings subtly convey a sort of mysterious eloquence as riveting as some of the more oblique verses in the vast canon of Bob Dylan’s songs and poetry. Some of them are enhanced with text by writers Eddie Gorodetsky, Lucy Sante and Jackie Hamilton who courageously imagine Bob Dylan’s thoughts or feelings about the works. The Halcyon Gallery show displays the fully envisioned completed paintings done in vibrant colors.
Iconic and genius are often overused adjectives but truly, how else should Bob Dylan be described? He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Also included among his innumerable honors are an Academy Award, 10 Grammys, a Golden Globe, the 1997 Kennedy Center Honors, and the 2012 Presidential Medal of Freedom. A suitably laudatory crown for these achievements was unveiled with the award of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Dylan’s visual art is widely collected and he has achieved considerable success with sold-out exhibitions. His color prints, hand-signed and numbered in editions of 300 or less have typically sold for $4,000-6,500 although some of his work does turn up regularly on eBay for less. A set of 14 prints from his 2018 Drawn Blank series topped $23,000 at auction in 2022. A full color multi-media painting from his Train Tracks series roughly based on his Blood on the Tracks album sold in excess of $268,000 in 2008. Point Blank (Quick Studies) is an affordable way to own some of his representative drawings and a must have for Bob Dylan fanatics. It’s a thoughtful gift for friends, family or oneself!
