The massive asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs also triggered mega-earthquakes that lasted months. Around 66 million years ago, an asteroid approximately 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) across smashed into Earth near the Yucatan Peninsula, plunging the planet into darkness and causing a mass extinction that wiped out 80% of animal life — including all the non-avian dinosaurs. The tremendous mega-quake caused by the collision  left its mark in rocks around the Gulf of Mexico, according to new research presented Sunday (Oct. 9) at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA).Hermann Bermúdez, a geology doctoral student at Montclair State University…

Chances are, you’re highly familiar with Lululemon’s Everywhere Belt Bag ($38). The versatile wardrobe essential is quite literally famous on social media, particularly TikTok and Instagram. It’s become so popular that it’s nearly impossible for the brand to keep it in stock. What’s more, countless brands have come out with lesser-price dupes to keep up with the crossbody hype. That’s all to say, though, that the Everywhere Belt Bag is still highly sought-after, and I completely understand why. Although it sells out often, be sure to check for restocks. If you can’t wait that long, the Everywhere Fleece Belt Bag…

There’s a uniquely bitter rage that comes from being asked to click every box that contains a parking meter only to then be told that you missed one because of a tiny sliver of gray that barely floated into the periphery of an otherwise empty, adjacent square. It’s a familiar fury, and one that captchas have been provoking across the web for years, but these maddening tools are important for blocking bots from conducting fraud and other abuse. Google’s reCaptcha, the dominant tool around the world for implementing these checks, came out with a version in 2018 that uses machine…

My tryout song was ‘dammit.'”He adds, “When I didn’t make it in the…

There’s really never been a film franchise quite like what’s about to happen with Avatar. Some studios have taken on a chance on making two sequels back-to-back; the last two Back to the Futures were shot that way, as were the first two Matrix sequels. But James Cameron isn’t making two Avatar sequels back to back; he’s making four back to back to back to back. And while the first of these movies, Avatar: The Way of Water, doesn’t even debut until December, Cameron has already shot a significant portion of the fourth film — which isn’t even scheduled to open in theaters under the best circumstances…

Frank’s decision not to endorse anyone in the Manhattan DA’s office caused a lot of drama. People kept showing up in his office, some of them irate on Erin’s behalf, but he refused to budge. Blue Bloods Season 13 Episode 2 had a happy ending to an entirely ridiculous conflict. Frank’s policy has always been to treat Danny and Jamie the same way he would non-related police officers, so why should anyone be surprised that he didn’t want to treat Erin differently than any other candidate? It wasn’t as if he had endorsed her opponent. He declined to make any…

In retrospect, the much revered “classic” lineup of Guns N’ Roses was together a relatively short time, with the first significant changes in the band coming in the early ’90s, but even with the initial alterations to the group, it was still one helluva ride the band was enjoying after monstrous success of their debut album Appetite for Destruction and the follow-up compilation Lies. While it could have been easy to capitalize on the early successes and churn out another album quickly, the band instead chose to double down on their work and release an ambitious two-volume collection on Sept. 17, 1991 called…

Most viral infections negatively affect an organism’s health, but one plant virus in particular — soybean vein necrosis orthotospovirus, often referred to as SVNV — may actually benefit a type of insect that commonly feeds on soybean plants and can transmit the virus to the plant, causing disease, according to Penn State research. In a laboratory study, the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences researchers found that when soybean thrips — small insects ranging from 0.03 to 0.20 inches long — were infected with SVNV, they tended to survive longer and reproduce better than thrips that were not infected. Publishing in the open access journal PLOS Biology on September 20, the study shows that instead of being related to vocalization, activity in these brain regions is related to the characteristic tree drumming that gives…

beabadoobee put a rocking spin on Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” during her performance at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. The 22-year-old is at the forefront of what you might call indie rock’s derrière-garde, a backwards-looking movement that finds inspiration in classics from the 1990s and early 2000s. Our former Artist of the Month has reinvigorated sounds first explored by Pavement, and now she’s doing the same with Carlton’s radio-ready piano pop. beabadobbee’s spin on “A Thousand Miles” opens with roaring crunchy guitars, though her voice remains conversational, even gentle. Ancient microbial life on Mars could have destroyed the planet’s atmosphere through climate change, which ultimately led to its extinction, new research has suggested. The new theory comes from a climate modeling study that simulated hydrogen-consuming, methane-producing microbes living on Mars roughly 3.7 billion years ago. At the time, atmospheric conditions were similar to those that existed on ancient Earth during the same period. But instead of creating an environment that would help them thrive and evolve, as happened on Earth, Martian microbes may have doomed themselves just as they were getting started, according to the study published Oct. 10 in…

A three-year study in northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana found that — even at small scales — emergent wetlands or ponds support many wetland bird species. The study also found that, at least in the years surveyed, the level of urbanization had little effect on most of the studied species’ use of such sites, provided the right kinds of habitat were available. The new findings are reported in the journal Ecosphere. Emergent wetlands are shallow-water sites usually found along the banks of rivers, ponds or bogs, where plants like cattails, sedges and rushes grow. Many wetland birds rely on emergent…

Photography via Imaxtree Toxic expectations of thinness plagued the early 2000s. So why, given that Gen Z champions inclusivity, is the Y2K aesthetic trending? By Meaghan Wray Date September 9, 2022 In the early 2000s, I dreamed of being thin. I flipped through issues of CosmoGirl and J-14, longing for a flat stomach like the pop stars they so frequently featured. I didn’t look like them; in fact, I never would look like them: I was a bullied fat kid who wore soccer shorts and Gap hoodies to school while the popular girls rocked platform flip-flops and jewelled tank tops.…
