CBS revived the flagship CSI show last year with CSI: Vegas, but it’s time to reminisce about the second-longest show in the franchise, CSI: Miami. The sun-drenched procedural debuted on September 23, 2002, taking fans of the original CSI out of Sin City and into the Sunshine State. “We all felt Miami was the most happening place,” CSI executive producer Carol Mendelsohn told the Sun-Sentinel before the show’s debut. “Miami is so rich as a character. There is so much water. There are so many different cultures here all colliding. Its politics are so interesting. All that gives Miami an…

A Johns Hopkins Medicine study of about 50 people with Alzheimer’s disease has added to evidence that damage to the inner ear system that controls balance is a major factor in patients’ well-documented higher risk of falling. Overall, the researchers say, their study found that impairment of the vestibular system was linked to a 50% increase in the risk of falling for patients with Alzheimer’s compared with patients who have Alzheimer’s and normal vestibular function. The study, published Feb. 14 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, is believed to be one of the first to demonstrate the vestibular system as…

Motorola’s Edge 20 series, which launched last year, helped the company compete very well in the premium smartphone segment, going beyond its familiar G-series and E-series budget smartphones. The Edge 20 and the Edge 20 Pro catered to the sub-Rs. 30,000 and sub-Rs. 40,000 segments of the market, respectively. Motorola has now launched the Edge 30 Pro as the successor to the Edge 20 Pro. While the latter was designed to meet a certain price point, the Edge 30 Pro seems to be aiming for top-end performance. Motorola has opted for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC to power this…

In particle physics, data long outlives the detectors that generate it. A decade ago the 4,100-metric-ton Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) reached the end of its life and was shut down, stripped of its parts for use in other experiments. Now a fresh analysis of old CDF data has unearthed a stunning discrepancy in the mass of an elementary particle, the W boson, that could point the way to new, as yet undiscovered particles and interactions. The W boson is massive, some 80 times heavier than a proton. Crucially, the W boson is responsible for certain forms of radioactive decay,…

DNA has a knotty problem. Thousands of times longer than the cell that contains it, this intricate strand of As, Ts, Gs and Cs must fold itself into a compact package. But the thin double helix molecule can’t jam itself in any which way, lest it wind up horribly knotted. What’s more, the cell needs certain segments of the strand—particular genes—to remain accessible to protein-making machinery while keeping others tucked away and turned off. It’s like playing Tetris with a tangled ball of yarn. Nucleus-containing “eukaryotic” cells, the type found in humans, plants and animals, rely on complex interactions between…

Tomorrow’s weather may be cloudy with a chance of electrons, thanks to a newly detected phenomenon in Earth’s magnetic shield.Described as unexpected, ultra-fast “electron precipitation,” the phenomenon occurs when waves of electromagnetic energy pulse through Earth’s magnetosphere – the magnetic field generated by the churning of Earth’s core, which surrounds our planet and shields it from deadly solar radiation. These electrons then overflow from the magnetosphere and plummet toward Earth. The torrential electron rains are more likely to occur during solar storms, and they may contribute to the aurora borealis, according to research published March 25 in the journal Nature Communications.…

I’m a firm believer that more is not more when it comes to beauty. A bigger price tag doesn’t necessarily connotate better results, nor does a bigger product array. (Take it from someone whose skin did a complete 180—in a much healthier direction—the second I slashed my a.m. and p.m. routines in half.) Don’t get me wrong. I’m more than down to invest in an absurdly expensive perfume, but I have to love it so much that the hefty price tag will feel well worth the splurge each and every time I wear it. And it had better last me a…

Over the past two decades, the Arctic has lost about one-third of its winter sea ice volume, largely due to a decline in sea ice that persists over several years, called multiyear ice, according to a new study. The study also found sea ice is likely thinner than previous estimates. Seasonal sea ice, which melts completely each summer rather than accumulating over years, is replacing thicker, multiyear ice and driving sea ice thinning trends, according to the new research. Arctic sea ice snow depth is estimated, for the first time, from a combination of lidar (ICESat-2) and radar (CryoSat-2) data.…
