“You don ’t look autistic.” This is what people say when I first tell them I ’m on the spectrum. But I do look autistic. The problem is that people, especially medical professionals, don ’t know what to look for when it comes to identifying and diagnosing autism in women and girls. I am a professor, a screenwriter, producer, mother and a woman who has autism. The challenges I have had in getting my diagnosis lead me to believe that we have to develop a more accurate standard autism test and better diagnostic criteria specifically for women and girls. This…

Photography courtesy of Getty Images The retailer’s controversial past is the subject of a new Netflix documentary. By Natalie Michie Date April 7, 2022 In grade school, my sense of style was entirely based on my desire to fit in. Back then, that meant wearing Ugg boots, skinny jeans and a t-shirt emblazoned with the name of a tween-approved brand. And if I was lucky, that brand would be Abercrombie & Fitch. Entering an Abercrombie & Fitch store in 2010 was an attack on all your senses. First, you had to go past the half-naked models that sometimes guarded its…

As a first preview, they shared the opening track, “Toni,” and its accompanying music video. After beginning work on The Other Side of Make-Believe remotely, the band reunited at a rented home in the Catskills to begin fleshing out new material in early 2021. For the second time in two months, the fastest man alive has run afoul of the law.The Flash and Justice League Ezra Miller was arrested in Hawaii on Tuesday morning for “second-degree assault after an incident at a residence in Pāhoa.” This incident follows an arrest back in late March where Miller was arrested for disorderly conduct and harassment following an altercation at a bar.According to the police report from the Hawaii Police Department, “at 1:10 a.m., Puna patrol officers responded to a report of an assault that occurred at a get together at a private residence in the Leilani Estates subdivision in lower Puna.”Miller…
Can love bloom from an unexpected collision over breakfast? The answer is a big, hilarious, cinnamony-sweet yes! In my latest enemies-to-lovers book, One Bossy Proposal. Dakota Poe—a young poet and copywriter distantly related to that Poe—came to Seattle for a reset. Shiny new career prospects, changing scenery, and no whiff whatsoever of the heartbreak she left back home. It’s all going according to plan until she butts heads with an outrageously rude, gorgeous, and domineering suit in her favorite cafe. She scored the last cinnamon roll and this man acts like his life depends on getting it back. The first…

A new discovery by physicists at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) could make certain components in computers and smartphones obsolete. The team has succeeded in directly converting frequencies to higher ranges in a common magnetic material without the need for additional components. Frequency multiplication is a fundamental process in modern electronics. The team reports on its research in the latest issue of Science. Digital technologies and devices are already responsible for about ten percent of global electricity consumption, and the trend is rising sharply. “It is therefore necessary to develop more efficient components for information processing,” says Professor Georg Woltersdorf,…
Our hair has been through a lot in recent years. With the two-year anniversary of the first wave of salon closures, it’s fair to say our strands have been subjected to their fair share of damage. But this year, the hairscape is looking optimistically different. For starters, appointment availability is aplenty, and it finally feels as though our hair routine (for the most part) is back to normal. While 2020 was spent trying to make our pre-lockdown cut last as long as possible, 2021 consisted of trying to get our strands fighting fit after all of the neglect. Now, with 2022 in full swing, we feel…

Wilmer Valderrama is not ruling out a return to the That ’70s show universe. In a new interview with TV Insider, the actor chatted about the forthcoming Netflix series That ’90s Show. “I’m a little busy right now, but I support them so much,” said Valderrama, who starred on all eight season of the original series on FOX. “I’m rooting for them. I wish them nothing but the best. And if the timing is right, I’d never say no.” Indeed, Valderrama is keeping busy. He currently holds a series regular role on NCIS as Nick Torres, and is also working…
Scientists have finally mapped an entire human genome, nearly two decades after researchers first announced that they had sequenced the majority of the roughly 3 billion letters contained in human DNA. Though the Human Genome Project was hailed worldwide when it was completed in 2003, at the time, many sections of the genome still couldn’t be placed. The new work — achieved by a consortium of scientists led by the National Human Genome Research Institute, the University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of Washington in Seattle — finally fills in the last 8% of DNA letters, or base pairs,…
Dominique Fishback is known for playing characters who have survived trauma. Just a year ago, she blew Hollywood away with her portrayal as Fred Hampton’s pregnant fiancée, Deborah Johnson, in Judas and the Black Messiah. And a few years before that, she earned acclaim for her role as a sex worker in the HBO series The Deuce. Now, in her latest project, she’s gearing up for one of her hardest roles—a 17-year-old traumatized by her parent’s death and her upbringing in the inner city.In Apple TV+’s new series, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Fishback stars as Robyn, a young…
Fence construction is growing rapidly throughout the world. An extension of the dingo fence is underway to add another 460 miles. Stout, often impermeable, fences are going up on national borders in Eastern Europe to deter migrants, and Europe now has more miles of border fences than it had during the Cold War. In China, the chief threat to Przewalski’s gazelle is habitat fragmented by new barriers. The length of fences in the American West alone is estimated at more than 620,000 miles—nearly three times the distance from the Earth to the moon.Better understanding the role that fences play in…
You can recycle, cut out plastic, switch to renewable products and use eco-friendly technology all you want, but if you listen to music, you’re still contributing to carbon emissions. However, some methods of consumption are less detrimental than others, and a new report by Rolling Stone explains how downloading music is actually better for the environment than streaming.Physical album sales have increased in recent years, especially in the vinyl and cassette formats. In December of 2021, vinyl experienced its biggest sales week in the U.S. since 1991 when 2.11 million vinyl records were sold. This is partly due to vintage trends making…
Video games seem utterly terrified to say anything most of the time, as evidenced by developers like Ubisoft and Infinity Ward going out of their way to say that their games are not the least bit political (when they’re not awkwardly backpedaling or coming up with odd, seemingly contradictory definitions). Saying it isn’t political, regardless if it is or not, is usually a weird cover developers or publishers use to not scare off some potential buyers that want the art they consume to be void of meaning. This is what makes the overtly political Road 96 a refreshing experience, even if…

The researchers used their new fabrication approach to create various structures that combined chalcogenide IR glass with fused silica glass. These included a set of pillars with different dimensions. A white dotted rectangle in the above image indicates the smallest silica cavity used in this work. Credit: Yves Bellouard, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne Researchers have developed a new fabrication process that allows infrared (IR) glass to be combined with another glass and formed into complex miniature shapes. The technique can be used to create complex infrared optics that could make IR imaging and sensing more broadly accessible. “Glass that…
When it comes to jewellery, I’ve always had a penchant for pieces that feel as special as they look. While I’m partial to a vintage hunt for a unique find, I also love discovering new (or just new-to-me) brands. And the ones I love most all have one thing in common: They’re all British. I’ve found that some of the most interesting and contemporary jewellery pieces are created right here in the UK by some of the most talented designers. It’s easy to spot some of the most popular brands on Instagram. Monica Vinader has already had Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner…
Apple’s iPad Pro and second-gen Apple Pencil are my favorite art tools. They’ve replaced all of my traditional art supplies. I curl up on the couch with my iPad to chill and watch Netflix almost every day. I use it more than I use my phone, by far, and that’s because of the Pencil. There’s something uniquely intuitive about the pairing of the stylus and tablet that makes me want to draw, sketch, paint, and take handwritten notes. I’m not alone. The app ecosystem that has sprung up around the Apple Pencil and iPad is growing fast as professional graphic artists…

Around the world, between 40 and 50 volcanoes are currently erupting or in states of unrest, and hundreds of millions of people are at risk of hazards posed by these potentially active volcanos. Yet, despite the profound hazards posed to human life and property by volcanic eruptions, humanity still cannot reliably and accurately predict them, and even when forecasts are accurately made by experts, they may not afford ample time for people to evacuate and make emergency preparations. Accurate and reliable predictions have remained an elusive target largely because volcanologists do not fully understand the natural dynamics and processes of…
