For those of us who love reading both fiction and nonfiction, there’s a certain category of book that combines these loves: nonfiction books about books. While I do sometimes read literary biographies, history, and criticism, there’s a particular category that rules them all. I love the books that dive into the fascinating stories behind literary phenomena. Because books, even singularly weird fiction that seems like it must have sprung from an author’s brain fully formed, don’t truly arrive out of nowhere. They reflect…

It’s A Wonderful Lifetime continues to deliver heartwarming stories about family, love, and the beauty of the holiday season. And A New Orleans Noel is the unmissable award-winning film on Lifetime’s slate stacked with talented, beloved stars from Keshia Knight Pulliam to Patti LaBelle. It is both a beautiful tribute to the Queen of Pralines, Loretta Harrison, and the city of New Orleans itself. It’s genuinely one of the most heartwarming films of the season. And TV Fanatic had the pleasure of speaking with director and co-writer Angela Tucker about it all. Check it out! First off, congratulations on it…
By the 2030s, the world will generate around a yottabyte of data per year—that’s 1024 bytes, or the amount that would fit on DVDs stacked all the way to Mars. Now, the booming growth of the data sphere has prompted the governors of the metric system to agree on new prefixes beyond that magnitude, to describe the outrageously big and small. Representatives from governments worldwide, meeting at the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) outside Paris on 18 November, voted to introduce four new prefixes to the International System of Units (SI) with immediate effect. The prefixes ronna and quetta…
A multinational team of researchers, co-led by a City University of Hong Kong (CityU) physicist, has found that a novel metallic crystal displays unusual electronic behaviour on its surface, thanks to the crystal’s unique atomic structure. Their findings open up the possibility of using this material to develop faster and smaller microelectronic devices. The material that was studied is a recently discovered “kagome” metal compound that consists of three elements: gadolinium (Gd), vanadium (V), and tin (Sn). It is classed as a “1-6-6” material to indicate the ratio of the three metal elements present in the GdV6Sn6 crystal. The atoms…

The FX+ 2 has a 250-watt Hydrive rear hub motor, which is the European standard. That might seem slightly underpowered to Americans looking to power up huge hills, but the bike is so light and maneuverable that having a smaller motor doesn’t matter much at all. The medium frame size weighs 40 pounds—almost 30 pounds lighter than my own Tern GSD S00.Not only is it easy to scootch up hills, it’s also easy to maneuver onto crowded bike racks when I’m out, or to lift onto our hanging bike rack in my garage. Also, for the past two weeks, it’s…
FBI Director Chris Wray is raising national security concerns about TikTok, warning Friday that control of the popular video sharing app is in the hands of a Chinese government “that doesn’t share our values.” Wray said the FBI was concerned that the Chinese had the ability to control the app’s recommendation algorithm, “which allows them to manipulate content, and if they want to, to use it for influence operations.” He also asserted that China could use the app to collect data on its users that could be used for traditional espionage operations. “All of these things are in the hands…
As 2022 comes to a close, it’s time to look back on the movies that came out this year. And while many films had exclusive theatrical releases — something we hadn’t seen in a while since the Covid pandemic — there were also plenty that were released directly on streaming platforms. Between HBO Max, Disney+, AppleTV+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Paramount+, the year was chock-full of new titles to watch from the warm, familiar comfort of our homes. As always, Netflix has delivered a wealth of original movies and TV shows — some good, some bad. We’re here to talk…
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Do You Remember Me?? The first chapter I wrote was one of the last chapters in the book. It started as a journal entry about life’s regrets. Lost loves, career short comings, and loss of faith. What kept developing in the story was a cry for love and acceptance. The final realization in this journey of discovery for me was the critical elements of “self-love.” If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Do You Remember Me?, what would they be? Everlong, Foo Fighters; The…
As we brace for the cold that December brings, we have lots of new TV to keep us warm. The hit HBO Max reboot Gossip Girl is back for Season 2 and the drama is as wild as ever. Julien (Jordan Alexander) decides to take a step back from her influencer career as her personal life deteriorates and starts looking into college. On the other side of the scale, The Simpsons spoofs a well-known rom-com. Meanwhile, on HBO, with only two episodes left of The White Lotus, we are dying to know the fate of the characters that we have…
A cheap powder can help treat wastewater by rapidly absorbing microscopic bits of plastic pollution – and because it is also magnetic, both can then be removed with magnets Chemistry 2 December 2022 By Alice Klein Microplastics end up in our drinking water as well as in the world’s rivers and oceansvovidzha/Shutterstock A magnetic powder that can rapidly suck out all the microplastics in water could be used by water treatment plants to better remove the contaminants. At present, most of these plants can remove only plastic fragments that are 5 millimetres in size or larger. That means smaller pieces…
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Yerin Kim Just as it is for many people, my relationship with denim is complicated. I’ve found jeans I loved, but none without flaws. I resonated deeply with the recent conversation around standing jeans on TikTok. I’ve always accepted that I have standing jeans that look great on, but are too tight for all-day sitting. And then oppositely, I have sitting jeans that I’m not obsessed with style-wise, but that are actually comfortable enough to sit in for hours on end. However, a new pair of jeans from The Consistency Project (TCP) completely reframed my…
The excellent Dell XPS 13 range has had the same look for several years now. A shakeup was most definitely in order. To align with Intel’s new 12th generation P and U series chips—with the former honed for more demanding productivity users, and the latter focused on thin and light designs—Dell split the lineup in two. There was the eccentric XPS 13 Plus (7/10, WIRED Recommends) and a redesigned XPS 13.The P-series-powered XPS 13 Plus was successful in making potentially gimmicky innovations an actual step forward, but its performance flattered to deceive. For the U-series XPS 13, the new look…

I’m a sucker for fairy tale retellings, from Cinderella to LGBTQ and gender-flipped iterations. What can I say? As far as I’m concerned, there are never enough. As long as there are writers and storytellers there will be creative new takes on the classic stories passed down through the generations. One of those stories that is told time and time again is the story of Little Red Riding Hood. A girl on her way to take some goodies to her sick grandmother is told not to stray from the path…but when she meets a wolf on the way, she doesn’t…
Wolf Pack comes to Paramount+ in the new year, bringing Sarah Michelle Gellar back to the world of the supernatural. While Wolf Pack is created by the man behind Teen Wolf, Jeff Davis, and both focus on teen werewolves, the stories aren’t connected. Davis, Gellar, and the rest of the cast explained how Wolf Pack is a whole new bag to Andrea Towers in TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine’s studio at New York Comic Con 2022. For starters, Wolf Pack‘s streaming platform allows for one big thing broadcast TV didn’t: swearing. Davis is thankful for this merciful change, though…
Immunotherapy, a biotherapy that boosts the ability of the immune system to recognize and attack mutant tumor cells, has transformed the treatment landscape for patients battling cancer, which emerges from the progressive accumulation of DNA mutations. However, many patients do not respond to immunotherapy. For instance, among highly-mutated colorectal and endometrial cancers, research has shown that only half will show a response to immunotherapy. A new study by Yale School of Medicine researchers published Oct. 27 in the journal Cancer Discovery, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, has identified a possible explanation for why this happens. In…

Of course, there’s the usual suspects: basking in sunshine, working out, eating healthy and nourishing foods. And then there’s the less typical mood-boosting sources, like updating your closet for fall or browsing through the new-arrivals section from one of your favorite fashion retailers. While I can’t say that there are…
Racial inequity biases algorithms, skews Covid-19 death rates, and exacerbates the digital divide. Your race is even a good predictor of what’s in the air you breathe—and now, a new study shows that those pollution concentrations are also tied to how segregated your community is.ContentThis content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.Using five years’ worth of data, a team led by scientists at Colorado State University confirmed a long-suspected link between ambient air quality and racial residential segregation. In a recent paper published in Nature Communications, they show that people in highly segregated counties in the…
Earlier this week, Nightwish vocalist Floor Jansen revealed that she was set to undergo surgery after recently being diagnosed with breast cancer. Now, having the cancerous tumor removed, Jansen has checked in via social media with an update.”The tumor removal surgery went well without any surprises,” says the singer. “I’m recovering well and should be up and about soon. It will take a few weeks to know what the findings are regarding the tumor and lymph node that will be tested. I’ll keep you posted.”The vocalist continued, “I want to use this opportunity to thank the medical staff that took…

A spacecraft equipped with a “sail” made from plasma could build up speed by repeatedly crossing the boundary at the edge of the solar system, just as an albatross soars by taking advantage of regions of different wind speeds Space 2 December 2022 By Jonathan O’Callaghan The termination shock, at the centre of this diagram, is where the solar wind first reaches interstellar spaceSCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY A spacecraft that crosses the boundary of plasma at the edge of our solar system could be boosted to the extreme speeds necessary for interstellar travel using a similar principle to how an albatross…
Hell of Hosanna by Kip Langton What’s it About? A futuristic phenomenon comparable to the iconic works of Brave New World, 1984 and Citizen Kane, and reminiscent of the final scene of Planet of the Apes when Charlton Heston stumbles on the ruins of the Statue of Liberty. Have you ever been in such awe of a book that you couldn’t find the right word to describe it? (Not a good place to be if you write reviews for a living!) Maybe the word doesn’t exist yet. Remember the classic Woody Allen movie Annie Hall when Alvy tells Annie that…
Both Thony and Nadia played dangerous games with Robert. If he figures out their plan, he won’t be merciful. Thony turned to Robert for assistance returning to Manilla for medicine when Luca became sicker on The Cleaning Lady Season 2 Episode 9. TV Fanatics Jasmine Peterson, Whitney Evans, and Laura Nowak discuss if Nadia is playing a dangerous game between two men, if Thony has turned to the dark side, and what Garrett will do next. A UNSW paper published recently in Nature Reviews Materials presents an exciting overview of the emerging field of 2D ferroelectric materials with layered van-der-Waals crystal structures: a novel class of low-dimensional materials that is highly interesting for future nanoelectronics. Future applications include ultra-low energy electronics, high-performance, non-volatile data-storage, high-response optoelectronics, and flexible (energy-harvesting or wearable) electronics. Structurally different from conventional oxide ferroelectrics with rigid lattices, van der Waals (vdW) ferroelectrics have stable layered structures with a combination of strong intralayer and weak interlayer forces. These special atomic arrangements, in combination with the ferroelectric order, give rise to fundamentally new phenomena…
