A new study from the University of Missouri School of Medicine is the first evidence in humans that short-term lifestyle changes can disrupt the response to insulin of blood vessels. It’s also the first study to show men and women react differently to these changes. Vascular insulin resistance is a feature of obesity and type 2 diabetes that contributes to vascular disease. Telegram has launched a new online marketplace to auction rare usernames and channels. This web shop has been built upon the Telegram Open Network (TON) blockchain, which was first thought of by app founders Durov brothers in around 2018. Later in 2022, the TON mainnet went fully live and operational. Via this marketplace, the instant messaging app will auction four or five letter handles and make shorter usernames available for people. The launch of this blockchain marketplace is intended to accelerate the adoption of the technology, that also makes for the underlaying backbone of cryptocurrencies.“For the first time, social media users…
U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Mike Lee will lead a new subcommittee investigating the lack of competition in ticketing markets. Klobuchar stressed the need to scrutinize Ticketmaster’s dominance over the concert ticket market in light of chaotic Taylor Swift Eras Tour sales last week. “Ticketmaster’s website failed hundreds of thousands of fans hoping to purchase concert tickets,” Klobuchar said. “The high fees, site disruptions, and cancellations that customers experienced shows how Ticketmaster’s dominant market position means the company does not face any pressure to continually innovate and improve.”Ticketmaster blamed unprecedented demand and a “staggering number of bot attacks” for the…

Purple tomatoes have been approved for sale in the US. Credit: JIC Photography/ flickr The first genetically modified (GM) food ever made commercially available to the public was a tomato, invented in the US in 1994. Since then, a number of different genetically modified foods have been created, including corn, cotton, potatoes and pink pineapple. Although genetically modified foods still get a bit of a bad rap, there are actually many good reasons why modifying an organism’s genetics may be worthwhile. For example, many breeds of genetically modified foods have made them more resistant to disease. It’s also possible to…
Photography by Scott Everett White/Netflix In my book, these kitschy flicks are the reason for the season. By Natalie Michie Date December 2, 2022 Secret Santa this. Twinkly lights that. It seems no one wants to talk about the real star of the holiday season: bad Christmas movies. I’m not talking about the classics — Home Alone, The Grinch, Elf — which are, obviously, masterpieces. Nay, dear reader. I’m referring to the run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter rom-com featuring stereotypical Hallmark storylines and everyone-saw-it-coming endings. With notable characteristics including a festive town backdrop, an always picturesque protagonist and a mysterious old man who…
Things didn’t look particularly good at the start of COP27. The word on everyone’s lips was “trust”—specifically, the lack of it. Since the last UN climate meeting, many rich nations hadn’t made good on their emissions pledges. Meanwhile, poor nations arrived angry at past failures to put their issues on the negotiating table—particularly plans for rich polluters to pay for damage caused by climate change. Add to that the venue: Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, where protesters were banned but tens of thousands of consultants and lobbyists were welcomed, and it could be concluded that COP, as a vehicle for progress, had…
Chris Hemsworth has revealed his genetic predisposition for Alzheimer’s disease, telling Vanity Fair that “my biggest fear” had come true. The Thor star received genetic testing for the docuseries, Limitless, which finds him grappling with aging and our bodies’ natural decline. He had planned to read the results on camera, and was surprised when he heard from the series’ consulting physician ahead of time. “They took all my bloodwork and did a bunch of tests and the plan was to on-camera tell me all the results and then talk about how you can improve this and that,” he said. “And Peter Attia, who is the…
Harrison Ford insists there is only one Indiana Jones — him. And the trailer for the upcoming fifth film in the franchise sort of proves his point. It has an Indy who’s roughly Harrison Ford’s age — namely 80 years old. And then it also includes scenes with a younger Indy, who is played by … Harrison Ford. (His face was de-aged using fancy special effects.)The trailer for this fifth Indiana Jones is here, and it reveals the film’s full title: It is called Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The trailer doesn’t indicate what the Dial of Destiny actually is, but it features…

The white-hot river of liquid iron never stops. Every hour of the day and night, at this steel plant in Sweden’s far north, the metal pours out of a hole at the bottom of a massive, 90-metre-tall blast furnace. Equally relentless, a stream of carbon dioxide belches out of the top. The CO2 is a waste product of the coal that the blast furnace devours. For every tonne of iron that will go to make steel, this furnace produces 1.6 tonnes of CO2, says Martin Pei, chief technology officer at SSAB, the company that owns the plant here in Luleå. The…

Since Elon Musk took over Twitter in late October, there’s been a sense that the ship is sinking, with the platform’s users scurrying offboard to safety. Musk’s actions, from mass layoffs to impulsive feature changes, have prompted widespread (if vague) speculation that Twitter itself will soon cease to exist, due to bankruptcy, technical failure, or a combination of the two. And while the platform’s future is uncertain, its current plight is an extreme version of one of the internet’s enduring qualities: Everything is constantly changing. We are nomadic in our platform usage, moving from one platform to the next—often involuntarily. And…

Just revealed at Brazil’s CCXP22, here is the new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Right off the bat, you’ll see the Guardians wearing matching team uniforms for the first time — uniforms that come right out of the Guardians comic books that first inspired this movie franchise. But just because they’re dressing as a unit doesn’t mean things are going well on the team. This Vol. 3 trailer strongly implies the film will mark the end of the team — and that some of the characters may die along the way. Several of the characters, including Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and Dave Bautista’s Drax, are shown badly…

When Parag Agrawal was appointed CEO of Twitter in November 2021, the IIT graduate joined a steadily growing club of executives from India rising to the top of global corporations, but the 38-year-old executive’s brief tenure at the helm of the social media giant was challenging and chaotic.
