Season 3 of The Mandalorian opens with a ritual, as a foundling is given his all-important helmet and armor for the first time. It looks like this may be a flashback to how the show’s title character, Din Djarin, got his armor — until the adult Din and (baby) Grogu show up to save the assembled Mandalorians from a rampaging space alligator creature. But there is a lot of symbolism in this scene you might have missed, from the images of forging armor suggesting the way The Mandalorian series is forging a new Star Wars mythology, to the way the interruption of the helmet ceremony…

SPEAKING at the University of Cambridge in 1980, Stephen Hawking considered the possibility of a theory of everything that would unite general relativity and quantum mechanics – our two leading descriptions of reality – into one neat, all-encompassing equation. We would need some help, he reckoned, from computers. Then he made a provocative prediction about these machines’ growing abilities. “The end might not be in sight for theoretical physics,” said Hawking. “But it might be in sight for theoretical physicists.” Artificial intelligence has achieved much since then, yet physicists have been slow to use it to search for new and…

What initially caught my eye was her coat—a sublime wool robe coat complete with a rather practical hood. You could, however, argue that a hood is somewhat redundant in L.A., but that’s neither here nor there. As an aside, I was struck by just how versatile a coat choice hers is; a neutral robe that would live quite happily in my wardrobe for a very, very long time. Pairing it with the year’s trouser silhouette to note, puddle pants, this look strikes the perfect balance of being completely and utterly timeless, whilst also appeasing the current fashion mood. Well played, Jolie. While…

Applying synthetic voices to books also brings new business and cultural challenges. “Most of the companies developing these AI technologies come from the technology sector, rather than the entertainment sector,” says SAG-AFTRA’s Love. “They lack the relationships, history of protections, and reliance on approval rights voice actors have come to expect.” Several authors told WIRED that Findaway has emerged as a reliable distributor, offering lucrative deals to list audiobooks across several platforms. But they also say that Findaway frequently prompts people to agree to updated agreements, usually with minor changes, when they log in to their accounts. The company added the…

This past year, like the rest of the bookish world, I sat enthralled by every update from the trial where the U.S. Department of Justice fought to block Penguin Random House’s acquisition of Simon & Schuster, another member of the Big Five. As I read updates about the trial, I kept getting flashbacks from when I was working for a university press and first heard about the negotiations for the Penguin–Random House merger back in 2012. But this time, I became distracted by something else coming out of the trial: a disdain that big publishing executives had for smaller presses. …

Photos produced by artificial intelligences could alter the performance of other AIs if used in training data setsDALL-E The popularity of text-to-image artificial intelligences could be their own downfall: if the pictures they produce proliferate too much, they could contaminate the data sets that new models are trained on, harming performance. AI tools like DALL-E 2, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion can create pictures of whatever people request, and their images are increasingly being shared online. Such AIs improve their results by training on data sets of billions of images and … Read The Full Article Here

But for scammers, he says, “the rewards are much greater if you can spend time obtaining the trust and confidence of your victim.”Steinbach says he advises consumers, whether on a banking app or…

For the record, I’m not talking about flimsy knits that do little else other than give my T-shirts a break. I mean big, chunky, Michelin Man–style jumpers that are cosy, comforting and, naturally, very chic. This, however, is a formidable combination and not one you come across every day. Some chunky knits can feel more bulbous than beautiful, while ones that deliver in the pretty stakes often lack the cosy quality I also look for. However, when a jumper does manage to kick off this golden triad, you know it’s worth your consideration. Read The Full Article Here
