Published online September 15 in Clinical Cancer Research, the study revolved around the set of immune system signaling proteins called antibodies that recognize invading bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Stephen Palumbi, a scientist at Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station, is on the hunt for what he calls “super reefs.” These are regions of the ocean that are home to unusual sets of coral. When the ocean heats up, coral species get stressed. That leads to a phenomenon called coral bleaching, where these invertebrates begin to expel the algal communities that typically live harmoniously within them. As a result, the coral lose their brilliant hues and turn white. But in “super reefs” the coral appear to have evolved to be heat-resistant and remain home to lush aquatic ecosystems. “They’re diverse, they’re…

One of the key differences between film acting and theater acting is that typically, a film actor is roughly the age of the character they’re playing. In the theater, there’s more wiggle room — costumes, wigs, and stage makeup can transform a teenager into a young child (take Annie, for instance) or a young adult into an older adult (or older feline, in the case of Cats). Movies and television aren’t usually granted this luxury, since it’s a lot easier to see someone in a camera closeup than it is hundreds of feet away on a theater stage. So while…

For microorganisms, apparently a lot. Prokaryotes are single-celled microorganisms—bacteria are an example—that are abundant the world over. In short, they’re everywhere, and scientists worldwide are working to both categorize and communicate about them. But here’s the rub: Most don’t have a name.
