The following essay is reprinted with permission from The Conversation, an online publication covering the latest research. Twitter was blocked in Turkey on Feb. 8, 2023, according to internet monitoring service NetBlocks. The outage came amid the massive rescue operation and humanitarian crisis in the aftermath of the earthquakes in southern Turkey and northern Syria two days earlier. Access to Twitter appeared to be restored about 12 hours after it was first blocked. Twitter is a microblogging platform that offers users a way to share short chunks of text, audio and video as well as the ability to post threaded conversations. Almost as…
We have six more weeks of winter, which means it is the perfect opportunity to bundle up and watch some new (and returning) shows. Halloween has come early this year. The first season of Netflix’s supernatural teen drama series Lockwood & Co. premiered and is full of ghouls in action. And the ghosts just keep coming! CBS’ Ghosts has returned this week for more spooky fun. Jason Segal and Harrison Ford’s new series Shrinking also premiered last week on Apple TV+ and the third episode of The Last of Us — which everyone is talking about — premiered on HBO…

Ever since watching the second season of “The White Lotus,” I’ve noticed a subtle (actually, relatively loud) fashion trend bubbling up on both my TikTok and Instagram feeds: maximalist fashion. It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact origins of this fad, but for now, I’m naming Jennifer Coolidge’s character’s comically Gen Z assistant, Portia, as the culprit for its latest resurgence. Love her or hate…
US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chair Gary Gensler has stated that he doesn’t view decentralisation as a fact of crypto markets, despite the origins of digital currencies in circumventing centralised authorities. Speaking at the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association’s (SIFMA) annual meeting on October 24, Gensler acknowledged that finance has been centralized and concentrated “since antiquity.” He added that there is a “tendency for central intermediaries to benefit from scale, network effects, and access to valuable data.” For example, Gensler said that just four asset managers managed over 80 percent of the total net assets in US index…

From the 1830s to the late 1860s, the Oregon Trail was one of the major routes for anyone wanting to travel west across the United States — and it certainly became the most famous, leading to many books about the Oregon Trail being written. On the Oregon Trail, several towns developed specifically to serve travellers along the route, many of which remain today. Despite being a well-established trail, travelled by nearly half a million people during its 30-year heyday, the Oregon Trial was…
To read the news, the sanctity of everything from college application essays to graduate school tests to medical licensing exams is imperiled by easy access to advanced artificial intelligence like ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that can produce remarkably clear, long-form answers to complex questions. Educators in particular worry about students turning to ChatGPT to help them complete assignments. One proposed solution is to roll back the clock to the 20th century, making students write exam essays using pen and paper, without the use of any Internet-connected electronic devices. The University of California, Los Angeles, where I teach, is considering making…
Oh, Garrett, what are we going to do with you? Wolf Pack Season 1 Episode 3 peeled back the layers of the family dynamic between Garrett, Luna, and Harlan, and truthfully, this family might never be the same again. Garrett found Luna and Harlan as baby wolves, and if his time as a parent has taught him anything, he needs to prepare for the unexpected. He understandably researched werewolves and understands the pitfalls of the twins being in a pack… or maybe he just watched Teen Wolf. Being prepared for the worst isn’t a bad idea, but he probably should…
Forget what you knew about naked dresses, because Kourtney Kardashian just upped the ante. In an Instagram gallery posted on Jan. 26, the Poosh founder took the revealing trend to new heights, showing off her nude-print gown. Styled by Dani Michelle, the high-neck Balmain look prominently featured a Renaissance-era nude painting of the female form running from collar to hem, mirroring the curves of Kardashian’s own body. Kardashian posed to demonstrate the optical illusion before giving her followers a look at the back of her dress. From behind, the outfit faded into a sky blue, trading the singular naked body…
Since Omicron became the world’s dominant Covid variant, it’s taken on a lot of shapes. First there was BA.1, then BA.5, and eventually others, including BQ.1 and BQ.1.1. Now all eyes are on another scrambled string of letters and numbers—XBB.1.5, also known as the Kraken, which has swept the northeastern US in recent weeks. The World Health Organization (WHO) has deemed XBB.1.5 the most transmissible version of the Omicron variant to date and announced that countries should consider recommending masks for risky situations, like flights. It’s quickly becoming dominant in parts of the US, and some experts are worried it may be able to dodge immunity…
It’s been 23 years since Marty Friedman parted with Megadeth, and while both artists have done great things since then, many fans have been longing for a reunion. Fortunately, it looks like that’ll be happening soon, as Friedman has suggested that he’ll be joining the thrash legends on stage in Japan in late February.Next month, Megadeth will begin their 2023 tour in support of 2022’s The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! (which Loudwire named one of the 50 Best Rock + Metal Albums of 2022). While they’ll eventually make it to Knotfest Australia and Blue Ridge Rock Festival, their first…

Presence, The Play by William Jefferson This book centers on the spiritual journeys of Brother Script, a member of the Order of Message Makers, a group of storytelling monks. They live on Estillyen Isle, surrounded by the misty Storied Sea, a sort of semi-mythical Hy-Brasil. Brother Script has toiled for years on his latest play, Presence, and it is opening night at the stately Theatre Portesque. And then the unexpected happens. As Script is fussing about near his balcony seat, he loses his footing, strikes his head against the railing and falls into a deep coma that plunges him into what…
Archaeologists in Italy are uncovering a 1,600-year-old burial ground containing the remains of infants, children and sacrificed puppies. Some of the burials have unusual features — such as a child buried with a block in their mouth, which suggests that people were afraid that they could become “revenants” — corpses revived after death, archaeologists said. Analysis of the burials indicates that many of the dead suffered from malaria. In 2018, it was suggested by local individuals that this child may have been viewed as a vampire, but new research suggests that this is inaccurate. The idea of the child being a vampire…
More horror stories are emerging from the set of Squid Game: The Challenge, Netflix’s forthcoming reality competition based on its global hit Squid Game. Previously, The Sun reported that on-set medics had swung into action after contestants had to hold statue-like poses for nearly 30 minutes in a freezing airplane hangar. Now Variety has first-hand accounts from former contestants. Per Variety, a game of “Red Light, Green Light” filmed in freezing conditions in a former Royal Air Force hangar in Bedford, England, on January 23 and culled around half of the reality competition’s 456 contestants — and the game took…
At this point, we’ve seen Jennifer Lopez in a multitude of wedding dresses, from intricate gowns with floor-sweeping trains to a simple fit-and-flare for her Las Vegas ceremony with Ben Affleck. The Galia Lahav design she wears as Darcy in 2023’s “Shotgun Wedding,” however, is by far her most elaborate yet. Created in collaboration with costume designer Mitchell Travers and Lahav head designer Sharon Sever, the blush-toned gown was crafted from fine silk tulle. Travers told POPSUGAR he was sure to incorporate vintage-inspired details such as pouf sleeves, patinas of embroidered lace, and silk netting, since it’s written in the…
As a Black female founder, Philips found herself in an industry where women-led startups account for only 2.8 percent of VC funding. In fact, according to one report, between 2009 and 2019, only one Black female founder in the UK raised any Series A funding at all. “Everyone knows what the venture capital space is for under-represented founders … The numbers speak for themselves,” Philips says, explaining she would regularly get rejected by investors, only to see white male counterparts with little more than “a PowerPoint” making pitches and “getting millions straight off the bat.”Eventually, Sojo was able to secure backers, initially through…

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Shadows of Askargaard? I can’t seem to walk from one place to another without thinking of a story. I see a connected world. The people I meet, the things I’ve seen, they’re all sewn into the fabric of this series. The characters I’ve created feel so personal to me because they’re manifestations of the people that have impacted my life. If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Shadows of Askargaard, what would they be? This one’s easy. For Pug, the MC, it’s a shot…
An open-source intelligence project is using GPS satellites to track intercontinental ballistic missiles, such as the one tested by North Korea last week Technology 23 November 2022 By Jeremy Hsu North Korea’s missile launch last weekOffice of the North Korean government press service/UPI/Shutterstock GPS satellites could be used as a global monitoring system for detecting intercontinental ballistic missiles. The principle was demonstrated last week when researchers identified the atmospheric disturbances caused by North Korea’s largest intercontinental missile test yet in satellite data. The researchers posted an animation showing their detection on Twitter – a big moment for an open-source intelligence…
Holy crap! Is Kate a killer?! It almost feels like Joe crossed the pond and stumbled upon a new version of Love, but there has to be more to the story of how Kate ended up holding a knife over Gemma’s body by the end of YOU Season 4 Episode 4. The bodies are piling up and Joe is no closer to figuring out who his stalker is, and to say Kate has been a distraction is an understatement. Joe sure as hell knows how to find a mess and embed himself in it, and everything about that trip to…
Photography courtesy of BOSS How a trip to Austria to try the BOSS x Perfect Moment capsule ski collection reignited the excitement of the slopes for our creative and fashion director. By George Antonopoulos Date January 23, 2023 My ski dreams were crushed in high school. I used to love skiing: the wind in your hair, the thrill of the chill, the feeling of flying when speeding down a mountain or in my case, just a hill. I wasn’t an Olympian by any means, but I could comfortably hold my own and enjoy myself in the process. That all changed…
In 2023, our understanding of the microbes that live inside the human gut will lead to new ideas for medicine. Today, we know that gut microbes help develop and sustain our immune system. They do that by producing high levels of three types of short-chain fatty acid molecules: acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid (or butyrate). The last of these, butyrate, promotes the activity of immune cells called regulatory T cells, or T regs. These cells are specialists at turning off the activity of other immune cells, which is vital to keep the immune system from damaging the body.…

In the increasingly competitive world of Super Bowl ads, one surefire way to attract attention in recent years is for a brand to partner with established actors or a show and bring back beloved characters that viewers haven’t been seen in a while and have them hawk life insurance or luxury automobiles or toilet paper or whatever. Last year, for example, viewers got to see Meadow and AJ Soprano again … in a commercial for Chevrolet (directed by The Sopranos creator David Chase, no less). This year, a chip company has engineered a similar reunion, as PopCorners has already begun teasing a commercial featuring…
Light pollution disrupts animals and has also been linked to human ailments. Bat scientist Johan Eklöf has some useful fixes in his new book Earth 23 November 2022 By Vijaysree Venkatraman Throughout our history, humans have been afraid of the darkChris Howes/Alamy The Darkness Manifesto Johan Eklöf Translated by Elizabeth DeNoma (Bodley Head) IN THE twilight, the bats that nest in the old church of Suntak in Sweden fly around, hunting for insects.
