Born to Rise by Lorna Blake It’s fitting that Lorna Blake, at the very beginning of her memoir, Born to Rise, tells a story about her mother as a little girl. Young Ethlyn was only 8 years old at the time, the ninth of ten children born to a poor coffee and cocoa farmer. Ethlyn’s much older brother had brought home some beans and instructed Ethlyn to cook them for dinner. “These beans are no good. They are poisoned,” declared Ethlyn. The brother wasn’t convinced, but she said go feed them to the pigs and see what happens. Sure enough,…

I’ll be honest. I didn’t think I’d see the return of 2002-esque footless tights, well, ever. But if there’s one thing we can rely on in fashion, it’s that everything is cyclical, and though I may have shiver-inducing memories of bright-pink footless tights paired with a DIY studded miniskirt from my childhood, others might be excited for the return of this hosiery. And if anyone could convince me to entertain the idea of a footless-tights revival, it’s Sienna Miller. The intrigue of Miller’s style comes from its unpredictability. You can really never guess what she’ll wear next. Some days she embraces bohemian classics, whilst on other…

Cristobal Pongo, one of many peasants of the Aymara Indigenous group who devote their lives to potato farming in this region highly susceptible to climate change, looks dejectedly upon the dismal scene. “The potato is our…

“Exascale” sounds like a science-fiction term, but it has a simple and very nonfictional definition: while a human brain can perform about one simple mathematical operation per second, an exascale computer can do at least one quintillion calculations in the time it takes to say, “One Mississippi.” In 2022 the world’s first declared exascale computer, Frontier, came online at Oak Ridge National Laboratory—and it’s 2.5 times faster than the second-fastest-ranked computer in the world. It will soon have better competition (or peers), though, from incoming examachines such as El Capitan, housed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Aurora, which will…

The Covid-19 crisis highlighted certain economic and welfare issues associated with using animals for research. Pandemic-related closures meant that many labs had to halt experiments and euthanize animals. Then the race to develop vaccines and treatments for Covid-19 meant monkeys were in short supply due to huge demand. While alternative methods are promising, they’re relatively new. Methods for developing organ chips, organoids, and computer models also vary from lab to lab, making it difficult to draw broad conclusions about their accuracy.  Boston biotech company chip Emulate, cofounded by Ingber, is testing how well its liver-on-a-chip device does at flagging the presence of dangerous chemicals.…

According to Druckmann — who serves as showrunner on the series alongside Craig Mazin — deciding when to deviate so heavily from the game often depends on how good they think the deviation will…
