I love autumn. As summer comes to a close, the mere mention of browning leaves and creamy hot cocoa is enough to send me rummaging through my wardrobe to rediscover all my cosy cold-weather clothes. Goodbye, cotton dresses and strappy sandals. While I’m always careful not to unnecessarily add to my ridiculous mountain of knitwear, I can’t help but take a peek at which fresh trends are emerging this time of year and how my favourite designers are interpreting them.No doubt about it: This year’s trends are good. So good I’ve composed a fantasy wish list that would likely cost the value of a small house to fulfil.…

Christmas time is supposed to be about coming together with loved ones, giving back, and lighthearted movies with a message. But if you’re naughty and lamenting the passing of Halloween, you can be a Grinch and watch some special holiday horror movies instead. Although your typical Xmas movie focuses on the Christmas spirit and a lesson in morals, these scary movies remind us of how society subverts those surface-level sentiments every year. That’s because Christmas is also about commercialism, lying, and pretending, and these flicks deconstruct those themes as well, with lessons of their own. Cynicism aside, the choices below…

A talent manager who allegedly helped artists like Vampire Weekend and Marshmello gain access to $200 million in COVID-19 relief funds is the target of a new lawsuit that claims he stole the idea to tap those government funds — aimed primarily at helping venues, not artists — from somebody else. In a complaint filed Wednesday (Nov. 30) in Los Angeles court, longtime music agent Laurence Leader says he was the first to realize that artists might also be able to access Shuttered Venue Operators Grants, a COVID-era federal program that gave out more than $14 billion to help live…

Before Walt Disney created Mickey Mouse, he created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit for Universal Pictures. The character, who became one of Disney’s first big animated hits, starred in a series of shorts beginning in 1927. Within a year, Disney lost control of the character. That’s when he created Mickey. Researchers at the University of Amsterdam have developed a novel approach to infrared spectroscopy that enables simultaneous characterization of molecular structure and size. Called Infrared Diffusion-Ordered Spectroscopy (IR-DOSY), the method nicely separates molecules with different sizes into distinct sets of IR peaks. Reporting on IR-DOSY in a paper that has just been accepted by Angewandte Chemie, the researchers foresee analytical applications in fields as diverse as proteins, polymers, pharmaceuticals and biomedicine. They are currently developing a first version of a practical chemical probe implementing the IR-DOSY concept. Inside the leading edge of a crawling cell, intricate networks of rod-like actin filaments extend toward the cell membrane at various angles, lengthening protein by protein. Upon impact, the crisscrossing rods glance off the membrane and bend as the collective force of myriad filaments pushes the cell forward. How flexible these filaments are, and how effectively they recruit essential regulatory proteins to their cause, depends on the properties of the individual actin proteins composing them. Now, a new study in Nature provides high-resolution structures showing how two key biochemical states of actin work jointly with bending forces to determine how…

While Christmas is not, in actuality, a holiday I specifically celebrate, it is a day of the year that I really enjoy. Even where I live, in the very un-wintery Los Angeles, Christmas does have a unique air about it. The streets empty and all the transplants depart town, leaving L.A. empty and still for this one day out of the year. And this stillness, to me, is the perfect atmosphere for curling up with a stack of books and some tea, and having a cozy day all to myself. This year, let’s make Christmas — or any of the…
