Living waters—from rivers, to ancient aquifers to wetlands—are sacred and alive. Credit: Shutterstock When the British colonized Australia they assumed terra nullius, “nobody’s land,” and aqua nullius, “nobody’s water.” In 1992, terra nullius was overturned—but aqua nullius remains. Aqua nullius denies the existence of Indigenous peoples’ own water governance principles, laid down through ancestral “first laws.” These customary laws are carried through songlines, trade routes and ceremony, embedded in a deep reciprocal economy of sharing. First laws guide the custodianship of living waters, with attention to intergenerational equity. Living waters—from rivers, to ancient aquifers to wetlands—are sacred and alive. As…

MONTH OF JanuaryHello, leader of the resolution pack! It’s not just because you’re a competitive Leo that you’re front of the line to start crushing the new year. The first three weeks of the year are always Capricorn season, when the Sun is in your efficient and organized sixth house. Until January 20, you’ve got this premium fuel in your tank. However, you might still run into some engine trouble. Communication and technology planet Mercury is retrograde until January 18, which could throw a few obstacles in your path, no matter how carefully you plot and pave it.Here’s a silver…
I love cooking with Mom. Food is a big thing in our family, but my cooking and so much of how I think about it comes straight from her. She’s a better, more intuitive baker than I am by a long shot, so when I found a cookie cookbook that blends science and creativity, I timed my review testing to line up with a trip home to see her.I’d discovered the book thanks to Jill Lightner, a food-writer neighbor who also runs a little free bakery in front of her Seattle home. Her story had me intrigued about the authors, Chris…
Chances are you’ve heard of a double neck guitar before, as many rockers have used them, especially live, to be able to create a multitude of sounds with one instrument (Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson). But now there’s a new type of guitar that’s double-sided, with a different neck on each side, and they’re no joke.Busuyi Guitars is the manufacturer behind this odd new instrument, and their motto is, “Delivering the future.” The purpose behind their double-sided guitars is pretty much the same as a standard double neck guitar — to be able to play two instruments in one — but the…

A new study has found that young Brits would be willing to change to a more sustainable diet, but a lack of understanding about what that actually means is preventing many from doing so. Many people are also uncertain about what changes they should make. Sustainable diets are defined by the UN as “diets with low environmental impacts which contribute to food and nutrition security and to healthy life for present and future generations.” Previous research has suggested that 20-30% of environmental impacts in Europe and the UK originate from our diets, including impacts from food production, processing and retail.…
When you ask someone to name the greatest detective in fiction, they will likely answer one of two ways. The classic literature fans will say Sherlock Holmes, and the comic book nerds will say Batman. Both men have become icons for their fancy duds, great brains, and memorable sidekicks. Sure would be nice if they could team up, huh? Fortunately, little things like the laws of time and space are no barrier for DC Comics. In Detective Comics #572, to commemorate the series’ 50th anniversary, we got not only a love letter to the title as a whole, but the…

Credit: Shutterstock Greater conservation efforts are needed to protect Antarctic ecosystems, and the populations of up to 97% of land-based Antarctic species could decline by 2100 if we don’t change tack, our new research has found. The study, published in PLOS Biology, also found just US$23 million per year would be enough to implement ten key strategies to reduce threats to Antarctica’s biodiversity. This relatively small sum would benefit up to 84% of terrestrial bird, mammal, and plant groups. We identified climate change as the biggest threat to Antarctica’s unique plant and animal species. Limiting global warming is the most…

My name is Theophilus Monroe. Perhaps you’ve heard of me. I’ve written and published over fifty urban and paranormal fantasies. Titles like The Legacy of a Vampire Witch, The Legend of Nyx, The Blood Witch Saga, The Vilokan Asylum of the Magically and Mentally Deranged, and The Chronicles of Zoey Grimm are some of my better-known series. My interest in paranormal fantasy began with authors like Anne Rice and Jim Butcher. However, growing up, I read a lot of epic fantasy. I still do. I love the legends like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. I’m also a fan of authors…
We root for heroes, but a TV show needs villains. 2022 had plenty of manipulators and monsters to keeping us riveted while make our skin crawl. These characters are vile, and we wouldn’t have them any other way. Check out TV Fanatic’s picks for the villains of 2022 we love to hate. Monet de Hann – Gossip Girl (HBO Max) Monet was on the periphery of the first season of the reboot, but the writers clearly understood Savannah Lee Smith was the strongest cast member and rewarded her with a deliciously villainous arc on Gossip Girl Season 2. Photography courtesy of Stéphanie Branchu/Netflix I can no longer pretend that I don’t like this show. By Natalie Michie Date December 22, 2022 ’Tis the season of self-care. In other words: It’s time to watch the entire season 3 of Emily in Paris in one sitting. That’s right, the newest instalment of Darren Star’s kooky dramedy is here, and once again, it welcomes us to follow marketing exec Emily Cooper (played by Lily Collins) as she traipses around Paris wearing ridiculous clothes and having zero inhibitions. As expected, it’s chock full of romantic chemistry, saccharine shenanigans and eye-assaulting outfits. And…
In April 2016, Waseem Qasim, a professor of cell and gene therapy, was captivated by a new scientific paper that described a revolutionary way to manipulate DNA: base editing. The paper, published by David Liu’s lab at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, described a version of Crispr gene editing that allowed for more precise changes than ever before. “It seemed like science fiction had arrived,” says Qasim, who teaches at University College London. The genetic code of every living thing is made up of a string composed of four chemical bases: A, C, G, and T. These pair up to form…

The trailer for Danny Boyle’s Yesterday — a film where a musician wakes up in a world where no one remembers the Beatles — featured an appearance from actress Ana de Armas. The musician, played by Himesh Patel, serenades her with a Beatles song (that everyone thinks he wrote) during an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden. That’s the trailer. But when the film came out, de Armas did not appear in the movie; her role had been cut out during post-production. (Supposedly, she was removed because test audiences did not want the Patel character to romance de Armas and preferred he…
Many Americans think of gout as a disease from a bygone era, akin to rickets or scurvy. The condition commonly afflicted the rich and royal, including American historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Gout is indeed one of the earliest known diseases, first identified by the ancient Egyptians around 2640 BC. But the disease is more prevalent now than ever, affecting more than 10 million people in the United States or approximately 5 percent of the adult population. Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, in which urate (a byproduct of purine-rich foods like meat…

The opening gambit of writer-director Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, his second in his series of Agatha Christie–style whodunits, is one of mischief. Tech billionaire Miles (Edward Norton) has sent each member of his gang of longtime friends a wooden puzzle box that, when unlocked, calls them all to his Greek island to “solve the mystery of my murder.” It’s a game, of course, but not everyone wants to play. Obviously, this is where the twists start. When the group arrives in Greece, they find that detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) has been invited to their annual friend gathering, too.…

None of the key characters in Damien Chazelle’s early Hollywood drama Babylon are historical figures. Jack Conrad, played by Brad Pitt, did not dominate 1920s Los Angeles with his charm and good looks. Nellie LaRoy, played by Margot Robbie, didn’t scandalize the silent film world with her “Wild Child” persona. And neither one interacted with an ambitious young studio executive named Manny Torres (Diego Calva), who overcame enormous obstacles to become one of the most powerful men in the industry. But to various extents, every character and sequence in the film is based on real historical events. The war film that’s being shot in a crucial early scene, for…

Who watches TV for the main characters? The supporting characters are usually far more interesting. 2022 provided no shortage of supporting characters running away with the show. These are the scene stealers of 2022 whose spinoffs we would watch. Commander Jett Reno – Star Trek: Discovery The incomparable Tig Notaro brings her signature snark to the role of Chief Engineer but, in actual fact, is the reincarnation of TOS’ Bones. Wait, that’s not the right term since they’re technically contemporaries. Emotional doppelganger. Yeah, that fits. Who wouldn’t give their port side nacelle to see a Young Sheldon-like prequel for Reno…
