Priyanka Chopra’s stylish press tour continues. After wearing a denim mermaid-style gown to the “Love Again” screening in New York City on May 4, the actor stepped out in her second look of the day for date night with husband Nick Jonas. Chopra changed into a pink cutout dress before heading to dinner at Sona, the Indian restaurant she co-owns. Made of a velvety material that caught the light as she walked the streets of Manhattan, her dress featured long sleeves, a twisted front, side and back cutouts, and a knotted skirt that created several more openings and strips of…

When I was younger, I gazed at the stars at night and wondered how many possessed planets like Earth. Being a Star Trek nerd, I couldn’t help but imagine a universe where stars were fecund and planets were everywhere. But not knowing was agony. This story has a happy ending, though: Now we do know—the galaxy is filled with planets. Even better, this story also comes with a twist worthy of an eyebrow-raise from Mr. Spock (accompanied by a flatly intoned “Fascinating”): most planets orbiting distant stars—what we call exoplanets—do not circle around ones like the sun. Instead, the vast…

A group of astrophotographers captured a breathtaking image of the recent “hybrid eclipse,” which was visible in the skies above Australia last week. The image mainly shows off the ghostly filaments of the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, but it also caught a faint glimpse of an eruption of magnetized plasma, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), exploding away from the sun. The rare eclipse, which occurred April 20, is known as a hybrid because it consisted of two separate eclipses occurring at the same time. These included a total solar eclipse — a fleeting yet complete occultation of the…

Eating lots of fats increases the risk of metabolic disorders, but the mechanisms behind the problem have not been well understood. Now, University of California, Irvine biologists have made a key finding about how to ward off harmful effects caused by a high-fat diet. Their study appears in Nature Communications. The UC Irvine research centered on a protein complex called AMPK, which senses the body’s nutrition and takes action to keep it balanced. For example, if AMPK detects that glucose is low, it can boost lipid breakdown to produce energy in its place. Scientists have known that consuming high amounts…

Ponderosa pine forests in the Sierra Nevada that were wiped out by western pine beetles during the 2012-2015 megadrought won’t recover to pre-drought densities, reducing an important storehouse for atmospheric carbon. “Forests store huge amounts of atmospheric carbon, so when western pine beetle infestations kill off millions of trees, that carbon dioxide goes back into the atmosphere,” said Zachary Robbins, a postdoctoral at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Robbins is corresponding author of a new paper published in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Science about carbon stored in living ponderosa pines in the Sierra Nevada of California. “We also found that…

photographyfirm/Shutterstock IN MOST parts of the world, earthworms are seen as the gardener’s friend because of the many ways they improve the soil. Worms feed on decaying organic matter and their faeces contain soil nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, in forms that are easier for plants to take up. Their tunnels also improve drainage and give a lighter, more airy structure to soil. Ecologists may use the number of worms in a patch of earth as an indicator of whether soil has a good pH, sufficient organic matter and isn’t too compacted. Gauging this in a standardised way…

In the future, it might be conventional morality that it’s simply wrong to own land.In our times, owning land seems as natural as owning cars or houses. The idea of controlling territory, specifically, has a long tenure. Animals, warlords, and governments all do it, and the modern conception of “fee simple”—that is, unrestricted, perpetual, and private—land ownership has existed…
