British supermarkets are imposing limits on how many salad staples shoppers can buy as supply shortages leave shelves empty of some types of fruit and vegetables. The disappearance of fresh produce is said to be largely the result of adverse weather leading to a reduced harvest in southern Europe and North Africa. Freezing temperatures caused tomato production in the southern Spanish region of Almeria to drop 22% during the first few weeks of February compared to the same period in 2022. Extra bureaucracy associated with Brexit and skyrocketing energy prices are also likely to have exacerbated the severity of the…

In a paper posted online before peer review, Feng Guo at Indiana University Bloomington and his colleagues say they have created “living AI hardware that harnesses the computation power … Read The Full Article Here

At first glance, the Silicon Valley Bank debacle seems to be a cut-and-dried financial caper. The executives running the 16th-largest bank in the US made the wrong choices in handling what seemed a fortuitous situation—a roster of clients, flush with venture capital funding, handing over billions of dollars of cash for storage in the institution’s coffers. But the bank’s leaders misjudged the risks of higher interest rates and inflation. Pair that with a mini tech downturn, and the bank’s spreadsheets began turning colors. When word of its perilous situation got out, panicky depositors pulled their money. After a government takeover, everyone’s…

Glimpsed only occasionally at the hearts of massive clusters of galaxies, ultramassive black holes are some of the largest and most elusive objects in the universe. These black hole behemoths have masses exceeding that of 10 billion suns, making them far more monstrous than even the supermassive black holes found at the centers of galaxies like the Milky Way, and their tremendous size has long perplexed astronomers. Now, researchers studying a rare galaxy merger with three supermassive black holes at its center may have finally discovered the origins of these cosmic monsters. Using a high-resolution cosmological simulation called ASTRID, the team modeled…

For the second straight week, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ruled the weekend box office chart, grossing $32.2 million and bringing its ten-day domestic total to a little over $167 million. But that’s pretty much where the good news ends for Marvel, as the film’s weekend-to-weekend drop was 69.7 percent — which represents a record worst second-weekend decline for any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in history. (The previous worst drop in MCU history was Thor: Love and Thunder’s 67.7 percent just last year.)There are a few potential reasons for the film’s extreme decline. While Quantumania opened strongly last weekend — and in fact had the…

New developments for achieving structural coloring through plasma irradiation of graphite can reduce the reliance upon harmful color dyes. Colors achieved by plasma irradiation are completely erasable and can be manipulated using time exposed to the plasma irradiation, intensity of the irradiation and the thickness of the graphite layer applied. The application of plasma-structural coloring aims to lessen the environmental toll typical adverse dyes have and combat them with the technology surrounding structural colors. Structural colors look different than how we perceive colors dyed by pigment, because structural colors are based on viewing how the light scatters when reflected, giving…

There are a lot of suspicions that during this era of book bans, we’ll begin to see a different output of material from publishers. They may pull back on queer books and/or books by people of color, those books which approach “sensitive” topics like sex and sexuality, and even graphic novels. Unfortunately, because of how publishing works years in advance, we won’t be able to see how this plays out for another year or two. But there is another element of the publishing ecosystem worth reaching to see if they have seen changes: literary agents. For those who are not…

Credit: CC0 Public Domain Sacrificial dilemmas are popular among philosophers. Should you divert a train from five people strapped to the tracks to a side-track with only one person strapped to it? These annual events are, after all, conveyed as an endeavor in accounting. They are a chance to show anticipated tax revenues and propose public spending. We are told the name of the…

Photography courtesy of launchmetrics.com/spotlight Throughout the pandemic, surrealist aesthetics emerged as the new norm. But now, there’s a growing appetite for familiarity. Pattern clashing, exaggerated silhouettes and fantastical runway stunts became a welcome sartorial escape from the bleakness of day-to-day pandemic life — and no designer is more synonymous with this grandiosity than Jeremy Scott. Since 2013, Moschino’s creative director delivered a signature campy, kitschy, cartoonish approach to fashion. More than anything, he found the humour in clothes at times when the world…
