By observing the night sky, medieval monks unwittingly recorded some of history’s largest volcanic eruptions. An international team of researchers, led by the University of Geneva (UNIGE), drew on readings of 12th and 13th century European and Middle Eastern chronicles, along with ice core and tree ring data, to accurately date some of the biggest volcanic eruptions the world has ever seen. Their results, reported in the journal Nature, uncover new information about one of the most volcanically active periods in Earth’s history, which some think helped to trigger the Little Ice Age, a long interval of cooling that saw…

Credit: CC0 Public Domain A trio of psychologists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of York and Duke University has found that great apes may sometimes engage in reciprocal food exchange under the right circumstances. In their study, reported in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Avi Benozio, Bailey House and Michael Tomasello conducted treat-giving experiments with captive chimpanzees and bonobos. Prior research and anecdotal observations have shown that humans have a tendency to engage in reciprocal behavior—if a person lends a tool to a neighbor, that neighbor is more likely to share one in return.…

The following post contains SPOILERS for Season 3 of The Mandalorian. Spoilerphobic? This is not the way.The third season of The Mandalorian ends with an image of tranquility. Din Djarin and Grogu — excuse me, Din Grogu — now officially father and son, relaxing at their new homestead on Nevarro. But for now, the two are together and at peace. It’s a nice final image for a season of television — just not this season of The Mandalorian, which…

In a twist on the question, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?,” scientists have long faced a similar question about how human adenovirus replicates: “Which comes first, assembly of the viral particle, or packaging of the viral genome?” Now, in a new study published today in Nature, researchers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) have answered that question, showing that viral proteins use a process called phase separation to coordinate production of viral progeny. “This study answers a fundamentally important question: how a viral nucleic acid gets inside a particle so that viral offspring can be delivered to…

Last October, it was announced that the the producers of the Western film Rust had settled a wrongful death lawsuit over the October 2021 incident that took the life of the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. Some three months later, after a series of setbacks for the prosecution, Baldwin’s…
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Keep Your Doors Locked? Last year, a dangerous prisoner escaped in our area. While this is NOT that story, I did draw upon my own feelings of apprehension and fear to express what my protagonist felt. Ice sheets can retreat up to 600 metres a day during periods of climate warming, 20 times faster than the highest rate of retreat previously measured. An international team of researchers, led by Dr Christine Batchelor of Newcastle University, UK, used high-resolution imagery of the seafloor to reveal just how quickly a former ice sheet that extended from Norway retreated at the end of the last Ice Age, about 20,000 years ago. The team, which also included researchers from the universities of Cambridge and Loughborough in the UK and the Geological Survey of Norway, mapped more than 7,600 small-scale landforms…
Photography by Getty Images Here’s what dressing in honour of Karl Lagerfeld might look like. By Natalie Michie Date April 28, 2023 Arguably the best thing about the Met Gala? The discourse, darling. In the days leading up to fashion’s biggest night, the internet is rich with guest list speculations and couture conspiracies. And in 2023, there’s no shortage of opinions surrounding the annual ball, which will pay tribute to Karl Lagerfeld. The late designer helped shape contemporary fashion through his work at Fendi, Chanel, and his own eponymous brand. He was also famously controversial — making fatphobic, misogynistic, and…
“We have an opportunity here to change the way users think about signing in,” says Christiaan Brand, an identity and security product manager at Google and co-chair of the FIDO2 technical working group. “If we can change the way that signing in works for your Google account, we hope that consumers will start to get more accustomed to the technology, and also signal to industry that we’re not just talking about this stuff—it is ready for prime-time adoption.”Passkeys can sync between your devices through end-to-end encrypted services like Google Password Manager and iCloud Keychain. Or you can set up passkeys…

I’m fine. Yesterday at Manaus Stadium in Brazil, experienced weakness because of dehydration. We stopped for about five minutes, I drank some water, and then all was well. Nothing serious. Tomorrow, Bogota Stadium. See you there!” An hour later, he posted another bit of reassurance: “Ok, kids. Not a big deal. Thanks for your kind wishes. Last night we played Amazon jungle Stadium/Brazil. Humidity…
Sometimes, in Hollywood, you have to cut corners. Especially when it comes to television. Some of the most popular TV shows were filmed on sets that were recycled for a completely different series — and you probably never even realized it.Unlike movies, which often shoot on location anywhere in the world, television shows (and especially sitcoms) predominantly shoot on one fixed set. At least, they did up until around a decade ago. Nowadays, TV series are granted the freedom to be filmed just like movies — and that includes a greater variety of onscreen locales. Even so, a great deal…
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write River of Mercy? Years ago, as a young newspaper reporter, I did a story on boating safety in the Sacramento River. I rode along with the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department for a week in their river patrol boat, hearing all kinds of stories. “There are bodies in the river that will never be found,” the sheriff told me. “Submerged cars conceal crimes that may never be solved.” This stuck with me because how can there be justice if someone gets away with murder? And what is mercy? Who deserves it?…

She revealed that he’s been out of the hospital for weeks and has recuperated enough to play pickleball. “Update from the family: Sad to see how the media runs wild. My Dad has been out of the hospital for weeks, recuperating,” Corinne wrote on her Instagram story. “In fact, he was playing pickleball yesterday! Thanks for everyone’s prayers and support. We have an exciting work announcement coming next week too!” The…
A warmer Arctic has been linked to extreme winter weather in the midlatitude regions. But, it is not clear how global warming affects this link. In a new study, researchers from Korea and USA show, using weather data and climate models, that while the “Warm Arctic-Cold Continent” pattern will continue as the climate continues to warm, Arctic warming will become a less reliable predictor of extreme winter weather in the future. Pictures of melting glaciers and stranded polar bears on shrinking sea ice in the Arctic are perhaps the most striking images that have been used to highlights the effects…
Karl Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette was more than just the late Chanel creative director’s pet. The Birman cat was his muse, a concept I understand fully as the mother of my own two cats, Trish the Tabby and Kit the Kitten. Like Lagerfeld, my cats are always by my side; Choupette was as ubiquitous in photos of the designer as his finger-less gloves or dark sunglasses. So, it’s no wonder many celebrities paid homage to her on the 2023 Met Gala red carpet. Choupette is a star in her own right, with both a German car commercial and Japanese beauty campaign…
