The fungus behind an outbreak of dangerous nervous system infections in U.S. residents who underwent cosmetic procedures in Matamoros, Mexico, has been identified. The culprit is Fusarium solani, a fungal species found in the environment whose genus has been tied to eye infections and fungal meningitis in the past, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced Thursday (June 1). Investigations into the outbreak suggest that many more people may have been exposed to the disease-causing fungus than have been initially identified. The CDC is therefore advising anyone who had a medical or surgical procedure done under epidural anesthesia at the…

I’ve been seeing the Uniqlo Round Mini Shoulder Bag ($20) all over my social media feeds — on my TikTok FYP or splashed subtly throughout my Instagram feed and Stories. Plus, it’s been spotted on plenty of festivalgoers at Coachella. The shoulder bag is functional with a lightweight and water-repellent design, comes in a variety of stylish colors including both neutrals and bright tones, and best of all, it’s affordable. The Round Mini Shoulder Bag seems to be a coveted alternative to this popular belt bag. Although the Round Mini Shoulder Bag looks cute and minimalist, I truly did not…
In theory, these cryptographic standards ensure that if a professional photographer snaps a photo for, say, Reuters and that photo is distributed across Reuters international news channels, both the editors commissioning the photo and the consumers viewing it would have access to a full history of provenance data. They’ll know if shadows were punched up, if police cars were removed, if someone was cropped out of the frame. Elements of photos that, according to Parsons, you’d want to be cryptographically provable and verifiable. Of course, all of this is predicated on the notion that we—the people who look at photos—will want to,…
New findings could explain biodiversity hotspots in tectonically quiet regions. If we could rewind the tape of species evolution around the world and play it forward over hundreds of millions of years to the present day, we would see biodiversity clustering around regions of tectonic turmoil. Tectonically active regions such as the Himalayan and Andean mountains are especially rich in flora and fauna due to their shifting landscapes, which act to divide and diversify species over time. But biodiversity can also flourish in some geologically quieter regions, where tectonics hasn’t shaken up the land for millennia. The Appalachian Mountains are…
Did you know that Queen’s transcendental hit song “Bohemian Rhapsody” originally had a different title? That’s what’s been revealed in unearthed hand-written notes as part of a collection of items belonging to late singer Freddie Mercury that are set to hit the Sotheby’s auction block in September. What fans rarely get to see are the working stages of songs they know and love, which could be anything from alternative titles to different lyrics, arrangements and, really, any aspect of the writing and recording process. Sometimes, the world will get to hear early versions of songs released as demos or rough mixes that are usually…

Whether you have seen that, ignored that, or did not know about it at all until this moment, this Amazon Prime limited docuseries is a must-view in order to understand the roots of today’s book censorship movement. Ostensibly an expose about the Duggar family, the series is much more than a story of the family. It is a look inside one of the most dangerous Christian fundamentalist movements in the country, the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBPL), spearheaded…

Home to 8.8 million people as of 2020, New York City is by far the most populous city in the U.S. And the mass of the buildings needed to support all those residents—and the work they do—really adds up. New research published on May 8 in Earth’s Future suggests that the weight of the city itself is pressing down on the land it occupies and contributing to local sea-level rise that increases flood risks. “In terms of worrying about sea-level rise globally, generally the notion that most people have is that ice is melting, and that changes sea level,” says…

For four seasons now, HBO’s Succession has given people something to tweet about on Sunday nights. Everyone, it seems, is obsessed with the Roys. With the finale airing on Sunday, it would seem that the big tent party is about to end. That’s not entirely the case. Online, Succession screengrabs, quotes, and references dominate the discourse in a manner that isn’t likely to dissipate anytime soon. Through its memes, Succession is already tiptoeing into eternity.Evidence of the show’s meme-ification is everywhere, from the picket lines of the Writers Guild of America strike to your Twitter timeline every time a rich person does something dumb. It’s a…
King Krule’s Space Heavy is out today, June 9th, via Matador Records. Now a decade out from his debut album as King Krule, Archy Marshall wrote Space Heavy over the past couple of years while traveling back and forth between London and Liverpool, the two cities where he’s been dividing his time. The album is billed as an exploration of “the space between” — or, as a press release explains further, “the space haunted by dreams of love, touching a narrative of lost connection, losing people and situations to the guillotine of the universe.” Once Marshall wrote the record, he fleshed…

Arctic ground squirrels are unique among mammals. Their ability to keep from freezing even when body temperatures dip below that mark on the thermometer enables them to survive extreme winter climates. New research published in Science analyzes more than 25 years of climate and biological data. The findings include shorter hibernation periods and differences between male and female hibernation periods. Spoiler alert — the girls “rise and shine” a little earlier in response to warming, which could have both positive and negative ripple effects throughout the food web in these ecosystems. Senior author Cory Williams, assistant professor in the Department…
The first official photos from The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 have arrived and they’re teasing the return of fan favorites and the arrival of newbies, including Kyra Sedgwick and Elsie Fisher, who join the ensemble. The series from creator Jenny Han (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) follows Belly as her story continues into another summer. While she once counted down the days until she could return to Cousins Beach, she’s not sure summer will be the same this time around as Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) fight over her heart and Susannah’s (Rachel Blanchard)…

Word choice matters — a lot — when it comes to research. That’s the main takeaway from a new article co-authored by Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation Assistant Professor Angel Algarin and published in Health Communication. “Researchers in any field should be cognizant of the language they’re using to describe the people they study so they don’t inadvertently add to the use of stigmatizing language,” said Algarin. For the article, Algarin and his co-authors performed a content analysis of HIV-related stigmatizing language published in scientific literature from 2010 to 2020. They found 26,476 peer-reviewed articles that used variations…
The Hives appeared on The Howard Stern Show this week. Though the band are getting ready to share upcoming new album The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons, they dug up their 2000 single “Hate to Say I Told You So” for this performance. “This song is the song that broke us through on a global scale,” vocalist Howlin’ Pelle said while introducing the track, his Swedish accent on full display. The garage rock crew, all decked out in their classic lighting-bolt suits, began the song with the same fiery energy they had back in the early 2000s. “Feel free to appreciate the precision…

Jeopardy! has been stumping many a player with its Final Jeopardy clues as of late, but the Wednesday, May 31 game proved to be a difficult game overall for both players and viewers at home. Fashion devotees know that the Anna Wintour seal of approval isn’t easy to come by, so when the EIC of Vogue steps out in multiple iterations of a similar style, we take note. Case in point? Wintour’s go-to shoe for all of fashion month: knee-high crocodile-embossed heeled leather boots, which she wore in New York, Paris, London, and Milan.Of course, one doesn’t amass a slew of signature footwear overnight. This is a tried and true trend for Wintour, who has sported these types of boots (routinely paired with long floral dresses and statement overcoats) for decades. While of course, she has an array of hues at her…

LAST year, one of our most commonly held ideas about depression was turned upside down. “Antidepressants study casts doubt on drugs taken by 8m people,” The Times newspaper stated in July. Other publications ran similarly alarming headlines. Depression is one of the biggest medical problems facing societies worldwide, treatments have long been controversial and here was research showing that Prozac and other common antidepressants are based on a defunct hypothesis about what causes the condition. The study’s lead researcher even went as far as to suggest that any benefits from such medicines come from a placebo effect. Most antidepressant drugs…
The band OK Go has reached a confidential settlement to end a bizarre legal battle with Post Foods over a new line of on-the-go cereal packages called “OK Go!” Just months after OK Go — a power pop band best known for its viral music videos — vowed to fight back against a “big corporation” that “chose to steal the name of our band to market disposable plastic cups of sugar to children,” attorneys for both sides asked a Minnesota federal judge to dismiss the lawsuit permanently, with each side paying their own legal bills. The filing said that the…
Bitten by a radioactive hamburger bun, student Peter Parker gained the proportionate strength and agility of a cow! Armed with his wonderous soda-shooters, the reluctant superhero struggles with sinister super-villains, making ends meet, and maintaining some semblance of a normal life! Stan Lee Presents: The Amazing Spider-Burger.Or something like that; it’s been a while since I read Amazing Fantasy #15. But I have to assume that somewhere in there was some sort of role for a strange-looking burger, because that is precisely how Burger King is promoting the new Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse film: With a “Spider-Verse Whopper” that comes on a bright red bun topped with…
Hedge by Jane Delury What is a mother? Mothers are often characterized as caring and selfless. They put their children above anything or anyone else. But mothers are still women, and women have desires of their own. What happens when the role of woman and mother clash? Jane Delury explores these conflicting roles in her latest novel, Hedge (Zibby Books), through the story of Maud, a woman torn between her love for her children and her love for something more. “Yes,” Maud thought. “I’m madly in love with my children. But why can’t I have more than one mad love?”…
Everything has always revolved around school and academic excellence. We revisited what had been missing for the past couple of Never Have I Ever Season 4 episodes. Senior year was the time to decide on the future everyone wanted, and for these nerds, getting into a great college was the first step, and college reps visited on Never Have I Ever Season 4 Episode 4. This was a momentous occasion for Devi, Ben, and Fabiola. I can’t stress enough how important this was. They had spent every waking moment of their academic life dreaming about getting into a great school, and…
