Unlike Negan in an infested New York City, Daryl doesn’t have…
The toilet on the International Space StationEuropean Space Agency Anyone with access to the internet is able to follow the toilet habits of astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS), a security researcher has discovered. An anonymous cybersecurity analyst, who goes by the name Gi7w0rm and works with a service that scans the internet for vulnerable devices, accidentally discovered that there were two data feeds coming from the ISS related to urine: one showing the percentage fullness of the urine tank on board the space station, and one showing the status of the processor unit that converts urine into potable water…
Representative Deborah Ross of North Carolina has introduced an enhanced version of the Protect Working Musicians Act, a bill that would grant an antitrust exemption to artists who seek to collectively negotiate for increased pay and protections from online music distributors and AI developers. Currently, independent musicians who seek to collectively bargain for higher payouts and safeguards for their work may actually be at risk of violating antitrust laws because they’re classified as “independent contractors,” and are not extended the same legal protections granted to workers who are classified as employees. Such antitrust laws are technically intended to prevent price-fixing and other…

The original version of this story appeared in Quanta Magazine.Of the 100 trillion neutrinos that pass through you every second, most come from the sun or Earth’s atmosphere. But a smattering of the particles—those moving much faster than the rest—traveled here from powerful sources farther away. For decades, astrophysicists have sought the origin of these “cosmic” neutrinos. Now, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory has finally collected enough of them to reveal telltale patterns in where they’re coming from.In a paper published in June in Science, the team revealed the first map of the Milky Way in neutrinos. (Usually our galaxy is…
An emerging system which combines rapid imaging with artificial intelligence could help scientists build a comprehensive picture of present and historic environmental change — by swiftly and accurately analysing pollen. Pollen grains from different plant species are unique and identifiable based on their shape. Analysing which pollen grains are captured in samples such as sediment cores from lakes helps scientists understand which plants were thriving at any given point in history, potentially dating back thousands to millions of years. Up to now, scientists have manually counted pollen types in sediments or from air samples using a light microscope — a…
The Dutton family made their way to the broadcast networks Sunday night, and it seems like the show will find new viewers wherever it airs. TV Line reports that Yellowstone Season 1 Episode 1 got off the ground running with 6.6 million total viewers. The numbers are awe-inspiring when considering the episode initially aired on Paramount Network in June 2018. Episodes are also available to stream on Peacock, but it looks like many viewers were waiting for the Duttons to come to the broadcast networks before sampling the series. CBS drafted in the Kevin Costner to shore up its fall…

Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain The deadly wildfires in Hawaii this month were fueled in part by plants, in particular invasive grasses that have taken over land once occupied by sugar and pineapple plantations. Some plants are more flammable than others, says Michele Steinberg, wildfire division director at the National Fire Protection Association. But “there is no such thing as a fireproof plant,” she says—all plants can ignite under the right conditions. Those conditions include improper pruning, insufficient watering, and poor sanitation practices that allow dry, dead plant parts to remain on the soil surface in high-risk areas. If you live…
The Quantum Leap project has been kept well under wraps … until now. Peter Gadiot is the other new addition as US Army Officer Tom Westfall. The exciting new footage teases leaps…
As a Who What Wear UK editor specifically focused on finding the very best shopping buys for you, I spend an awful lot of time scrolling through brands’ new-in sections. Researchers investigated the relationship between historical traumatic events experienced by Alaska Native communities and epigenetic markers on genes that previous studies have linked to trauma. The new study found a similar pattern among Alaska Native participants, with specific epigenetic differences observed in those who reported experiencing the most intense symptoms of distress when reflecting on historic losses. The study also found that individuals who strongly identified with their Alaska Native heritage and participated in cultural activities generally reported better well-being. The new findings are detailed in the International Journal of Health Equity. The study is the result of a close…

Anti-vaccine campaigns are often associated with misinformationJanine Wiedel/Alamy Facebook’s attempts to remove misinformation about covid-19 vaccines from its platform instead made anti-vaccine content more extreme, say researchers. David Broniatowski at the George Washington University in Washington DC and his colleagues monitored engagement with more than 200,000 posts on Facebook pages and groups between 15 November 2019 and 28 February 2022. Within that period, Facebook made three major announcements, which together advanced the platform’s approach to clamping down on content that shared incorrect information about vaccinations. Two in the Head by CK Laurence What’s it About? A Superstar Wide Receiver is toppled from his throne when he is (perhaps falsely) accused of a double homicide. It’s no coincidence that the public and the media are drawn to high-profile criminal cases when a major sports figure is involved. As it turns out, so are readers. Co-authors C.K. Laurence and Jerry Lyons no doubt were aware of this phenomenon when they wrote a snappy murder mystery that centers around a famous but fictitious football player of the Miami Demons, Ron Ramirez. The book is called Two in the…
Researchers who previously developed the first 3D human cell culture models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) that displays two major hallmarks of the condition — the generation of amyloid beta deposits followed by tau tangles — have now used their model to investigate whether the exercise-induced muscle hormone irisin affects amyloid beta pathology. As reported in the journal Neuron, the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)-led team has uncovered promising results suggesting that irisin-based therapies might help combat AD. Physical exercise has been shown to reduce amyloid beta deposits in various mouse models of AD, but the mechanisms involved have remained a mystery.…
