Although jeans aren’t typically deemed warm-weather wear, there’s something about an English summer (or lack thereof) that heightens my appreciation of the jeans-and-top formula. Like a throw-on crew-neck T-shirt or a compact umbrella, denim looks are stored in my fashion archive within easy reach to construct a laid-back look in a moment’s notice.Jeans-and-top combinations stand strong, regardless of the season. Jeans one of a few dependable items that exist amongst more frivolous fashion counterparts—it never fails to astound me how this simplest of pieces can carry the weight of an ensemble, and even improve it. Jeans are the building blocks of both trend-forward and off-duty looks. Denim appreciation is on the…

J. Robert Oppenheimer, now the protagonist of a much-anticipated film hitting theaters on July 21, is today most known for his scientific leadership of the U.S. Manhattan Project, the World War II–era crash program to build the first-ever atomic bombs. But just a few years earlier, Oppenheimer had found himself pondering very different “weapons” of mass destruction: black holes—although it would be decades before that name arose. “It was influential; it was visionary,” says Feryal Özel, an astrophysicist at the Georgia Institute of Technology, of Oppenheimer’s work on black holes and neutron stars, the superdense corpses of expired massive stars.…

It is both a cautionary and informative tale about how the loss (or…

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write My Best Break? Cynthia Anderson is a recurring character in the My Best Series who readers didn’t particularly like. I thought it was time to change that. My inspiration for this book came from a story about a father who discovered the daughter he raised from birth wasn’t biologically his. Cynthia’s story is a bit different, but it still touches on the fact that things aren’t always what they appear and it is up to each person to deal with life’s surprises. Bat activity falls as farms make the transition to organic agriculture, new research shows. Organic farming is better for biodiversity than conventional farming, which relies heavily on substances such as pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers. However, little is known about how wildlife is affected by the transition period when a farm goes organic. The new study, led by the universities of Bristol, Göttingen and Exeter, assessed the effects of organic farming by monitoring insect-eating bats at citrus orchards in Cyprus. The conflict went on so long it was immortalized by its centenarian length: We know it as the Hundred Years’ War.The crypto wars haven’t yet reached that mark. This is a big week for Hollywood: amid a massive writers’ and actors’ strike, two potential blockbusters are opening on the same day: Christopher’s Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. The former portrays a man who reshaped the world through physics. The latter portrays a woman who lives in a world that defies the laws of physics altogether. Oppenheimer’s world is ours, dictated by physical laws we have studied for centuries. But, what might the physical laws of Barbie’s world look like? This is a natural question for me as a Ph.D. student studying the philosophy of science. But it…
