For years, unrecycled plastic bottles have been dumped in landfills. Now, thanks to new research from UBC Okanagan, those bottles may have a second life in that landfill — stabilizing its earth walls. Used plastic bottles and textiles pose an increasing problem for landfills worldwide. Researchers say nearly a hundred million metric tons of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), also known as microplastics, are produced globally each year — with a fraction of that number being recycled — making it one of the largest sources of plastic waste. “One way we can manage plastic waste is through integrating it into geotechnical construction,”…

Mission: Impossible always goes for grander and grander heights. The 7th entry in the series is no different. Tom Cruise hasn’t slowed down a bit even though he’s getting older, and it really shows in one specific scene from the new film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Here’s the thing about heightening these movies though. They’re all about spectacle. You can’t just get bigger and better by being more dangerous. There’s a certain art to it.The train scene in Dead Reckoning is an incredible example of that. As they explain in the featurette below, you can’t really just go out and buy…

Around one third of people with heart disease suffer from sleep problems. In a paper published in the journal Science, a team at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) shows that heart diseases affect the production of the sleep hormone melatonin in the pineal gland. The link between the two organs is a ganglion in the neck region. The study demonstrates a previously unknown role of ganglia and points to possible treatments. The fact that melatonin levels can decrease in patients with diseases of the heart muscle, for example after a heart attack, has been known for some time. This…

Some people just need grace. Before arriving in a courtroom for a hearing, all defendants have been through stuff most people can never imagine. The purpose of a hearing is to determine whether a person is guilty of the crime they’ve been accused of by all fair means. As Danny’s trial ended on The Crowded Room Season 1 Episode 10, his defense team pulled something short of a miracle. Stan and Rya had avoided putting Danny on the stand because it is usually the smart thing to do. When a counselor puts their client on the stand, they expose them to…

In New York City in 2018, a cat reportedly fell from the window of a 32nd-floor apartment onto hard asphalt—and survived. After a two-day stay at the vet, who treated a collapsed lung and broken teeth, the four-legged friend was able to return home. It’s likely that other similar situations have given rise to the adage that cats have nine lives. For decades, researchers from a wide range of disciplines have been trying to understand their amazing survival skills. But it was not the animals’ falls from dizzying heights that first puzzled physicists in the late 19th century. Instead experts were stumped by…

The network has immediately pulled Down to Earth With Zac Efron and Fantastic Friends from their Tuesday slots. News of the shows being yanked from the schedule is not entirely surprising: Down to Earth With Zac Efron touched down on the network’s summer slate with just over 300,000 viewers. A week later, the numbers were down to 232,000 viewers. Fantastic Friends started with 161,000 viewers and dipped slightly to 158,000 in week two. While the numbers are not terrible (by CW summer standards),…

The anticipation for the “Barbie” movie wardrobe has been at an all-time high, cinematically speaking. The movie has become a jumping-off point for the Barbiecore fashion trend and plenty of merch from designer collaborations. The workload was an impressive feat to take on, especially since her team only had 11 weeks to make the looks — and they continued creating while filming progressed. Durran drew inspiration from a range of sources, including iconic Barbie dolls from the ’80s and pastels…

It was also nearly invisible to scientists until now. In the last 15 years, the hunt for molecules from living organisms—many with promise as drugs, antimicrobial agents, chemical catalysts and even food additives—has relied on computer algorithms trained to search the DNA of bacteria, fungi and plants for genes…
