What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write My Best Break? Cynthia Anderson is a recurring character in the My Best Series who readers didn’t particularly like. I thought it was time to change that. My inspiration for this book came from a story about a father who discovered the daughter he raised from birth wasn’t biologically his. Cynthia’s story is a bit different, but it still touches on the fact that things aren’t always what they appear and it is up to each person to deal with life’s surprises. Cynthia is hungry for success but she…

There will be some big changes whenever Bob Hearts Abishola returns for its fifth season on CBS. That much we’ve known for a few months, ever since it was revealed that only Billy Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku will return as series regulars. While fans were left in shock hearing that much of that most of the show’s cast had been demoted, Bayo Akinfemi wasn’t that surprised. “It was a bit surprising, for all of 10 seconds,” Akinfemi, who plays Goodwin, explained to The New York Times. “We are disappointed, but we also understand at the end of the day [that]…

Bat activity falls as farms make the transition to organic agriculture, new research shows. Organic farming is better for biodiversity than conventional farming, which relies heavily on substances such as pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers. However, little is known about how wildlife is affected by the transition period when a farm goes organic. The new study, led by the universities of Bristol, Göttingen and Exeter, assessed the effects of organic farming by monitoring insect-eating bats at citrus orchards in Cyprus. Activity of three of the four species included in the study was significantly lower at farms in the transition period, compared…

When I contemplate the return of the crypto wars—attempts to block citizens’ use of encryption by officials who want unfettered spying powers—I look back with dread on the late Middle Ages. I wasn’t alive back then, but one feature of those times lingers in my consciousness. Starting around 1337 and all the way until 1453, England and France fought a series of bloody battles. The conflict went on so long it was immortalized by its centenarian length: We know it as the Hundred Years’ War.The crypto wars haven’t yet reached that mark. (In this column I will be reclaiming the…

This is a big week for Hollywood: amid a massive writers’ and actors’ strike, two potential blockbusters are opening on the same day: Christopher’s Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. The former portrays a man who reshaped the world through physics. The latter portrays a woman who lives in a world that defies the laws of physics altogether. Oppenheimer’s world is ours, dictated by physical laws we have studied for centuries. But, what might the physical laws of Barbie’s world look like? This is a natural question for me as a Ph.D. student studying the philosophy of science. But it…

One of the most popular shows of the last ten years is getting a renaissance thanks to Netflix. While the USA Network legal drama delivered stellar ratings when it aired on the cable network, the show is still in demand four years after its conclusion. According to Deadline, the series picked up an incredible 3.1B viewing minutes during the week of June 26 to July 2. Those numbers include streaming on both Netflix and Peacock, and they’re very impressive. This is the biggest tally for an acquired series on the Nielsen streaming chart, and there’s a good chance the numbers…

Sony smartphones have such a niche focus on photo and video features that they lose a lot of mainstream appeal. They cost a good deal more than even the top-end iPhone, too. The new Xperia 1 V doesn’t change any of this—it’s $1,399, which is $200 less than its absurdly expensive predecessor, but still pricey. (In the UK and Europe, there’s no price drop and you’ll pay £1,299 and €1,399, respectively.)There’s a lot to like about the Xperia 1 V, and it has a few features that are rare on high-end phones these days, but it’s not for everyone.Hanging OnThe…

The following post contains SPOILERS for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. When it was announced that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would be the final Indiana Jones film, a lot of folks took that to mean Indy was going to kick the bucket in the film. It probably didn’t hurt that the film was directed by James Mangold, who previously made Logan, which didn’t end too happily for old Wolverine. (Maybe that’s why the film has underperformed at the box office? People don’t want to see Indiana Jones die?)But no, Indy survives Dial of Destiny. And in a new interview…

When a movie geared toward children is particularly successful — think Frozen, The Little Mermaid, or Encanto — there will without a doubt be a line of toys to follow. Somewhere along the way, the link between kids’ movies and merchandise became intertwined — it’s nearly impossible for a movie to come out without an accompanying toy line. But sometimes, this process is reversed. The toy itself is so iconic, it inspires a movie (or several movies). Over the past few decades, we’ve seen just how enduring a popular franchise can be at the box office. Why dream up a brand new…

Her Elder Blood takes those standard fears of abandonment and insecurities and turns them into real nightmares. Of course, the poisonous desert lizard she snacks on probably doesn’t help. Like us, cells communicate. Well, in their own special way. Using waves as their common language, cells tell one another where and when to move. They talk, they share information, and they work together — much like the interdisciplinary team of researchers from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) and the National University of Singapore (NUS). They conducted research on how cells communicate — and how that matters to future projects, e.g. application to wound healing. What comes to your mind when you think of biology? Animals, plants, theoretical computer models? The last one, you might not associate…
