Because of the wide distribution of pigments within the human body, some of these genes might be involved in disorders such as the skin cancer melanoma and even Parkinson’s disease, which affects pigmented cells in…

For the first time, researchers have observed “quantum superchemistry” in the lab. Long theorized but never before seen, quantum superchemistry is a phenomenon in which atoms or molecules in the same quantum state chemically react more rapidly than do atoms or molecules that are in different quantum states. A quantum state is a set of characteristics of a quantum particle, such as spin (angular momentum) or energy level. To observe this new super-charged chemistry, researchers had to coax not just atoms, but entire molecules, into the same quantum state. When they did, however, they saw that the chemical reactions occurred collectively, rather…

Still, squeezes have been a concern in TSMC’s home of Taiwan, where droughts have pitted local farmers, who saw their irrigation systems shut off, against the chip maker. Not just any water will do. Credit: Trinity College Dublin Approximately 99.9% of fish and shark species are “cold-blooded,” meaning their body tissues generally match the temperature of the water they swim in—but researchers have just discovered the mighty basking shark is a one-in-a-thousand exception. Instead, these sharks keep the core regions of their bodies warmer than the water like the most athletic swimmers in the sea such as great white sharks, mako sharks and tuna. The latter examples are so-called “regional endotherms” and are all fast swimming, apex predators at the top of the food chain. Scientists have long reasoned that their ability to keep…
