Gastrulation, the process where an embryo reorganizes itself from a hollow sphere into a multilayered structure, is considered a “black box” of human development. This is because human embryos are typically not cultured for longer than 14 days because of bioethical concerns, and gastrulation occurs between 17- and 21-days post-fertilization. In addition, current stem cell models that mimic gastrulation have not been able to include the necessary extraembryonic tissues that give rise to the yolk sac and the placenta. In a study appearing on July 20 in the journal Cell, researchers report a new method to develop “peri-gastruloids,” an embryo-like…

Last summer, a Mississippi poet and author named Teresa La Dart filed a copyright lawsuit against Taylor Swift, claiming that the pop star stole design details of La Dart’s 2010 poetry book Lover and used it for the book accompanying Swift’s 2019 album of the same name. Now, La Dart has permanently dropped her case against Swift, Billboard reports and Pitchfork can confirm. The motion, filed Thursday (July 27) in a Tennessee federal court, was the result of a voluntary dismissal, not a settlement. In the initial complaint (obtained by Pitchfork), La Dart alleged that Swift’s Lover book—which came with the…

She’s back in her childhood home and ready to start again. Heath has an idea that just might get her back to the top. The only problem? She’s falling for him, and that might cost her everything.  Set in the fast-paced world of angel investors, software…

Sabertooth cats make up a diverse group of long-toothed predators that roamed Africa around 6-7 million years ago, around the time that hominins — the group that includes modern humans — began to evolve. By examining one of the largest global Pliocene collections of fossils in Langebaanweg, north of Cape Town in South Africa, researchers present two new sabertooth species and the first family tree of the region’s ancient sabertooths on July 20 in the journal iScience. Their results suggestthat the distribution of sabertooths throughout ancient Africa might have been different than previously assumed, and the study provides important information…

Muons continue to confound physicists. These unstable subatomic particles are much like familiar electrons, only with 200 times the mass and a fleeting lifetime of just 2.2 microseconds. Unlike electrons, however, muons are at the center of a tangled inquiry into the prevailing theory of particle physics. For decades, physicists have puzzled over tantalizing hints that muons are more sensitive to magnetic fields than theory says they should be: run muons in circles around a powerful magnet, and they “wobble,” decaying in a different direction than expected. This apparent discrepancy in the muon’s “magnetic moment” has been significant to physicists…

GORN. Totally called it. I have mixed feelings about how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 10 wraps up the sophomore season of Paramount+’s newest Trek, mainly because the cliffhanger ending doesn’t actually wrap anything up. However, a lot can be forgiven in light of the introduction of young Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Montgomery Scott. It’s a brilliant follow-through to the Scottish-accented voice heard in Engineering on last season’s finale when Pike is transported onto a future Enterprise. Firstly, I acknowledge that the “TO BE CONTINUED…” season finale is a Trek tradition. But, to be fair, it’s one that…

For some reason, linen has never really been a fabric that I’ve warmed to. I think it’s due to my reluctance to buy clothing that is so obviously restricted to the summer months which, in UK terms, usually means a period of about eight weeks. I’d much rather buy something I can justifiably wear all year round. Historically, I have also never been someone who feels comfortable in that “bohemian beach-dweller” vibe that so often dominates summer collections. But this season, due to the glorious weather ahead, I have conceded that actually linen might be just what I need right now, and the more I browsed 2023’s offering, the…

The Himalayas include the world’s tallest mountains.  (Image credit: Inigo Cia via Getty Images)The Himalayas, which include the world’s tallest mountains, weren’t born the way geoscientists thought. The tectonic plates that collided to form the peaks 45 million to 59 million years ago were already pushing against each other, causing the Himalayan mountains to rise to more than half their current elevation, before the big crash gave them a violent shunt upward, scientists say. This means the iconic mountains may have started their ascent into the sky far earlier than previously believed — around 63 million to 61 million years ago…

Female killer whales live up to ninety years in the wild, and most live an average of twenty-two years after menopause. Previous studies show that, even after having their last calf, killer whale mothers take care of their families by sharing the fish they catch. Now, in a study published on July 20 in the journal Current Biology, researchers note that these mothers can also provide social support to their sons by protecting them from being injured by other orcas. “The…

I’m the first to admit that the latest trends can seem exciting. We’re trained in the fashion industry, after all, to sit up and take notice at least twice a year when designers’ new looks are sent down the runways, primed and ready to be labelled the next cult buys, and then worn by the elite style set on the street. However, after a decade of working in fashion, I can confirm that even when the most inventive trends offer that heart fluttering excitement (and hopeful bank balance check), it’s rarely these items that any of us wear day to day. In reality,…
