Grey Daze returned to the music scene in 2020 with the Amends album, as a tribute to their onetime vocalist Chester Bennington, gaining permission to showcase his vocal tracks performed with his onetime bandmates and some of his musical peers. They followed in 2022 with a second collection titled The Phoenix. But might there be a future for the group beyond their initial vision of reuniting to celebrate Chester’s musical legacy?During a chat with KCAL 98.7’s Wired in the Empire host RadioActive Mike Z., drummer and Grey Daze founder Sean Dowdell and the band’s current touring vocalist Cris Hodges discussed…

Meg Duff: For Science, Quickly, I’m Meg Duff. [CLIP: Show music] Meg Duff: Last week, if you missed it, I was up in Harvard Forest, learning about a hidden economy: underneath our feet, plants and fungi are constantly trading carbon and nutrients. Duff: Trees use carbon as currency to trade with fungi. Scientists have figured out that they can watch this nutrient economy in action by reading the chemical signatures in the leaves of trees. Those signatures help predict what’s going on in the soil, where trees trade with mycorrhizal fungi through their roots. Next, scientists are planning to get…
For August, we are celebrating women’s fiction titles that showcase characters relocating from a small town to a big city. Big cities and small towns can be canvas on which authors develop their characters or even characters in and of themselves. Here are four books that perfectly capture this plot device. Prosperity Island: A Novel by Kate Lott Betz An arranged marriage … a false identity … a fake pregnancy—all for the love of money or justice? When seventeen-year-old Harley Jane Reynolds runs away from her group home and gets a job in a bar, she’s not expecting to meet…
Photography courtesy of launchmetrics.com/spotlight Capture the essence of summer with these evocative scents. By Melissa Fejtek Date July 17, 2023 Picture yourself strolling down cobblestone streets in Provence, where the scent of sweet honeysuckle wafts through the air. Or taking a dip in the salty Mediterranean sea in between sips of chilled bubbly. Sound like a dream? Of course it does, because a European vacation is the stuff dreams are made of. And while jetting off to the French Riviera or a remote island in Greece may not always be in the cards, there’s an easy way to infuse your…
Like a lot of people, Alex Woolner was instantly fascinated by ChatGPT, the AI-powered chatbot which took the internet by storm when it launched in November 2022. But instead of asking it to write screenplays or satirical poetry or magazine articles (OK, not really), she turned it toward her hobby: making cute crochet animals called amigurumi.“Crochet patterns in and of themselves are kind of like a code,” says Woolner, who works for a study-abroad organization and also cofounded an arts and activism collective called Attack Bear Press. “I wanted to see what ChatGPT would produce if I asked it for…
This is the end, Riverdale fans! After many years of milkshakes and mischief, we’ve made it to Riverdale Season 7 Episode 20. The series finale was a roller coaster of emotions for the characters and us watching at home. There are plenty of sweet endings and sad goodbyes for these beloved characters we’ve known for seven seasons. It’s a heartbreaking end for the wild and entertaining (yet sometimes frustrating) story that was Riverdale. “Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Seven: Goodbye, Riverdale” served true to its name. Riverdale’s series finale was a nostalgic trip down memory lane and a farewell to the characters.…
Glasses that block blue light may not actually reduce eyestrain from looking at computer screens. That’s according to a new review, published Thursday (Aug. 17) to the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, that assessed 17 randomized controlled trials of blue light-blocking glasses that included nearly 620 people in six countries. Based on these trials’ results, glasses that “block” or “filter” the blue light emitted by computer screens don’t appear to prevent or relieve eyestrain any better than glasses that don’t filter blue light. Manufacturers sometimes also claim that, by blocking out some of the shorter, or blue, wavelengths of visible light, these…
It is a huge honour to have the queen of disco, Róisín Murphy on “Freak Me Now.” I messaged her hoping she may be interested in featuring on the song and before I knew it she was in the studio. She recorded all her vocals for the track and sent them over to us. I have admired her work for so many years & respect her so much. To have her on one of the most fun tracks on That! Feels Good! Is amazing. I can’t wait for us to do this together live in the future! I know my…
John Wick: Chapter 4 didn’t leave a ton of room to continue its story into sequels, so how about a prequel instead? The story continues (or I guess begins?) in The Continental: From the World of John Wick, which is set to premiere on the Peacock streaming service next month. Set at the hotel from the John Wick films where assassin types congregate and mingle, The Continental is a prequel that reveals the early days of a young Winston Scott — who eventually becomes the manager of the Continental in the John Wick movies, and is played by Ian McShane. On the show, Winston is played by Colin…

Spoilers below. There’s a lot going on in episode 5 of the second season of And Just Like That… or maybe it feels that way because there are so many characters outside of the iconic leading ladies to keep track of these days. It seems as though everyone had a side plot this week, which is at times overwhelming and other times very rewarding—like watching Evan Handler (Harry) have the time of his life in a wig.But to start: Miranda is burning the candle at both ends so she can sleep every night in Che’s Hudson Yards apartment and also…
For years, the Envy x360 line has been developing as HP’s most versatile laptop, with a slim, appealing chassis, solid performance, and the flexibility of a convertible tablet mode—all while keeping the price tag reasonable. Today there is an endless procession of Envy x360s to choose from, with screen sizes ranging from 14 to 16 inches and prices as low as $550. The hardware design is no-nonsense but not unattractive, presented as a monochrome gray or silver chassis with all corners well rounded.HP’s latest update to the now well-matured Envy line is this 15.6-inch model (official model number 15-fh0097nr), powered…
While the sun is the most scorching object in our solar system, its temperatures pale in comparison to several other cosmic bodies. So what is the hottest place in the universe? “I think a good answer is very near a supermassive black hole, especially a supermassive black hole that’s accreting, which just means it’s eating gas,” Daniel Palumbo, a postdoctoral fellow at the Black Hole Initiative, a research group at Harvard University, told Live Science. Feeding black holes that host relativistic jets — or enormous beams of material being propelled to “very near the speed of light” — are particularly sweltering,…

An object known as WT1190F entering Earth’s atmosphere in February 2015 was thought to potentially be a UFO, but was likely human-made debrisIAC/UAE/NASA/ESA The following is an extract from our monthly Launchpad newsletter, in which resident space expert Leah Crane journeys through the solar system, the galaxy and beyond. You can sign up for Launchpad for free here. Aliens are in the headlines, but there still isn’t solid evidence that they’ve come to Earth. On 31 May, NASA’s new task force on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs) held its first public meeting. UAP is basically bureaucrat-speak for UFO, anything in the sky…

Ryan Reynolds has begun shooting Deadpool 3 in London, and Blake Lively made a set visit. At one point, Lively and Reynolds were photographed having a cute, affectionate moment, with Reynolds kissing Lively’s head while in costume. The snap is a rare candid look at the couple’s relationship a decade into marriage.Production on Lively’s own film project, It Ends With Us, is currently on pause due to the ongoing WGA writers’ strike. With the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, poised to go on strike too, production will pause on all ongoing projects with union members, presumably including Deadpool 3. BACKGRIDWhile Reynolds and…
The number of smartwatches on the market is staggering. We’ve tested models from Tag Heuer, Citizen, Montblanc, and many other fashion brands, but most of them are simply too expensive for what you get. Here are a few other options we like.Samsung Galaxy Watch5 for $280 and Watch5 Pro for $380: Last year’s Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro (7/10, WIRED Recommends) are still great buys, just make sure you pay less than what the new Galaxy Watch6 models cost. They match the Apple Watch’s accuracy in several health and fitness metrics, from SpO2, sleep, and heart-rate tracking to electrocardiogram measurements…
Putting a suite of new materials synthesis and characterization methods to the test, a team of scientists from the University of Iowa and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory has developed 14 organic-inorganic hybrid materials, seven of which are entirely new. These uranium-based materials, as well as the detailed report of their bonding mechanisms, will help advance clean energy solutions, including safe nuclear energy. The work, currently published online, was recognized as both a Very Important Paper and a Hot Topic: Crystal Engineering in Angewandte Chemie, International Edition. It will appear in July’s print issue. While it’s…
The Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes leave the future of TV up in the air. Although the list of shows delayed by the strikes is indeed growing by the day, there is still scripted TV on the horizon. Outlander, for example, began airing its seventh season on June 16 on Starz and airs its Part 1 finale in August. Jamie and Claire Fraser’s time-traveling love story continues with Season 7 Part 2 in 2024, which has already been filmed. Justified: City Primeval, Miracle Workers, Foundation, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Good Omens, Heartstopper, and more have also returned,…
In his first major interview, Oliver Anthony’s co-manager Draven Riffe talked to Billboard about the whirlwind that has surrounded the Virginia country singer over the past week-and-a-half since his everyman anthem “Rich Men North of Richmond” went viral and the record label feeding frenzy to sign him. On Saturday (Aug. 19), near a playground in front of the venue before Anthony’s afternoon show at Eagle Creek Golf Club and Grill in Moyock, N.C., Riffe explained how he met the singer-songwriter and why Anthony’s newly assembled team is “taking it slow” when it comes to weighing the multitude of offers coming his way,…

New research from the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus has determined that enjoying a tasting at a winery goes well beyond the sip. Dr. Joy, along with her collaborators and students, studied several Okanagan wineries over a three-year period to comprehensively document the experiences of visitors. Sofía Vergara’s stylish summer continues. On Aug. 19, the actor dressed to the nines in a sultry outfit for Karol G’s concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. Again showcasing her love for corset silhouettes, Vergara wore a black Mônot bustier bodysuit featuring a boned bodice, sheer panels, and a plunging sweetheart neckline. She tucked the top into a pair of black ripped Ser.o.ya jeans worn unbuttoned and folded over, and finished the look with heels, a silver necklace, and a crossbody bag. There’s a market for nostalgia, and NBC’s cashed in big with its newest hit, Quantum Leap. The 2022 revival of the popular 1980s Scott Bakula-anchored time travel series came in like a quantum accelerator, throwing everything and everyone into the mix. While maintaining some temporal continuity with the original series, the new Quantum Leap introduced viewers to the team behind the project rather than just the leaper and his guide. What is Quantum Leap about? The initial twelve-episode order was quickly upped to a full eighteen-episode season, and the leaps got wilder as Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) slowly regained…
