Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. Voting Opens for the 2024 Goodreads Choice Awards Voting is now open for the bookish internet’s annual popularity contest: the Goodreads choice awards. I have never done this, but you could probably win your theoretical office Fall Madness pool (this does not exist) by just looking at which of the nominees have the most rating in each category and picking those. (Maybe I will do that this year?). Because when you ask the internet to vote for things you will…

Global carbon emissions from fossil fuels have hit a record high in 2024, and there’s still no sign that they’ve peaked, scientists reported. The researchers found that humans dumped 41.2 billion tons (37.4 billion metric tons) of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in 2024, a 0.8% increase from 2023.When added to the emissions created by land-use changes, such as deforestation, a total of 45.8 billion tons (41.6 billion metric tons) of carbon dioxide was emitted in 2024. At this rate, the researchers estimate there’s a 50% chance that global warming will consistently exceed the 1.5 Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warming target…

Critic’s Rating: 4.8 / 5.04.8The Irrational Season 2 Episode 6 had everything that makes me love this show. University politics can be crappy, especially when a student’s death is inconvenient for the school’s reputation, but Alec handled the situation — and Simon’s mother — perfectly. I also appreciated how sensitively it handled the topic of suicide, which always risks over-sensationalism and the spreading of misinformation. [Note: This article will talk extensively about that subject, so if that is a trigger for you, proceed with caution.] (NBC/James Dittiger) The Irrational Season 2 Episode 6 Dealt Sensitively With The Idea of “Suicidal…

If I’m being real with myself, I’ve never been much of a dress person. I rely on skirts, trousers, and jeans for 99% of my outfits, only opting for the dresses in my closet for special occasions or days when I’m feeling especially stumped about what to wear. Some dresses, however, are simply superior to the rest, and when they come around, my usual tendency to avoid the clothing genre goes right out the window. One such dress debuted on Tory Burch’s S/S 24 runway last September during New York Fashion Week. Well over a year later, I can still remember…

Menopause is weird. If you’re a human woman, you’re born with every egg you’ll ever have in your ovaries. By the time you reach your fifties, every egg is gone. You stop getting your period. As your hormone levels change, you experience symptoms ranging from hot flashes to a loss of bone density. We don’t know much about it, because only humans and some whales experience it. There’s also a gap in research specifically for women’s health.A slew of recent initiatives, from both the public and private sectors, are trying to change this. Last year, First Lady Jill Biden launched…

Fans watched Liz struggle through worse hunger than the other castaways in Survivor Season 46, leading many to wonder why the show would cast someone who wouldn’t be able to eat most of the scarce food available in the first place. It also raised questions about why Liz, and anyone with food allergies or strict dietary restrictions, would want to compete. The two most important metrics to look for when shopping for a flashlight are the batteries and the lumens.Batteries: There are two big categories of both flashlights and headlamps: rechargeable flashlights and those that take batteries. The difference is in how you recharge them. AA or AAA batteries are easy to find and can be swapped out quickly. When your light dies in the dark, you’ll see the genius of separate batteries.
