What To Know
- Fashion designer Wayne Scot Lukas claims Janet Jackson’s 2004 Super Bowl costume reveal was planned, though Jackson has maintained it was accidental.
- Lukas says the outfit was redesigned days before the show and that a planned camera cut to black failed after Justin Timberlake tore the bustier.
- He alleges Jackson and her team bore the fallout while Timberlake faced little career impact, and says he was not approached for Timberlake’s upcoming Apple TV docuseries.
More than two decades after the infamous 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show, new claims suggest that Janet Jackson‘s “wardrobe malfunction” was never an accident at all.
Wayne Scot Lukas, Jackson’s longtime fashion designer, recently alleged to TMZ that the controversial stage reveal was entirely intentional.
According to Lukas, the outfit was redesigned just two days before the big game because production wanted to outdo viral pop culture moments, such as Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera‘s MTV stage kiss in 2003.
The original plan allegedly called for Jackson to show off a custom G-string, but the concept shifted to the bustier tear. Lukas criticized the phrase “wardrobe malfunction,” alleging it was a term coined by Justin Timberlake to deflect blame.
Lukas also alleged that broadcast cameras were supposed to cut away to black immediately after the tear, a critical safety cue that failed, leaving Jackson to shoulder the professional fallout, while Timberlake faced minimal career impact. He claimed the scandal cost him and other team members their jobs due to strict corporate morals clauses, adding that Timberlake never reached out to clear the air.
These behind-the-scenes details come ahead of Timberlake’s upcoming Apple TV docuseries, which is set to premiere this December.
Despite being the architect of the outfit that went viral, Lukas says he was never approached to contribute to Timberlake’s project.
Both pop stars have seen their share of headlines in the years since. Timberlake experienced some turbulent public scrutiny following his DWI arrest in 2024. Meanwhile, Jackson has continued to celebrate her legacy, receiving a 2026 induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame earlier this year for her Rhythm Nation 1814 album, while also continuing to perform globally.
While Lukas believes it is time for Timberlake to finally come clean and tell the full story, Jackson has consistently maintained over the years that the incident was entirely accidental.
