Why The Office Rarely Had Celebrities Play Themselves

“The Office” carved out its place in television history despite a reputation for not leaning heavily on big-name actors or celebrity cameos (like when “The Simpsons” got Lindsay Lohan to voice Maggie). The lack of recognizable faces wasn’t due to a lack of interest from Hollywood A-listers, either. It was a deliberate decision from the show’s creative team — despite plenty of pressure from NBC to the contrary.

Lee Eisenberg was a writer and producer for the show (and is recognizable for his minor role as Vance Refrigeration employee Gino). He spoke to Vulture about the concept of getting high-level celebrities. “The network was insistent that we get celebrities, and that was really complicated … For a lot of reasons, people just decided that putting someone like that in just takes you out of the reality of the show.”

Fellow producer Randy Cordray — who married Jim and Pam aboard the Maid of the Mist in one of TV’s most memorable weddings – expanded on Eisenberg’s comments. He pointed out that series creator Greg Daniels was decidedly against those kinds of cameos — even though it put him at odds with NBC. Daniels’ main qualm was the setting. Having recognizable celebrities show up in Scranton, Pennsylvania didn’t make sense. Why would they be there? What idea could you pitch that made any sense? Their presence would make the world of “The Office” feel less real.

The writers and producers still tried to work with A-list talent

Randy Cordray elaborated that Greg Daniels didn’t like having celebrities in the series en masse. He just had to find his own way of getting them on the show. In the case of the Season 5 episode “Stress Relief,” it was by making “a movie within the movie.” “Andy had access to stream a movie on his laptop and so we created this movie,” Cordray explained, referring to the scenes where he, Jim, and Pam watch a pirated movie starring Jack Black, Jessica Alba, and Cloris Leachman, who all play themselves. “That was our way of satisfying the network creative people and putting promotable star talent into the Super Bowl episode.”

There was plenty of A-list talent in other in-universe roles, as well. A procession of major actors was brought in for the Season 7 finale, “Search Committee.” Well-known stars like Ray Romano and Jim Carrey played potential candidates to replace Michael Scott as Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton. Will Ferrell ended up sticking around as Deangelo Vickers for one more episode, before James Spader’s Robert California became a main character in Season 8.

Lee Eisenberg reflected on other celebrities the team never got the chance to work with, revealing, “I remember wanting Matt Damon or Ben Affleck to be on it. I was like, ‘Okay, we’ll get somebody who has a blue-collar feel to be running a warehouse or they’re gonna go up against Michael somehow. It’s Matt Damon or Ben Affleck versus Michael Scott.'” In the end, though, a surprisingly small number of celebrities ended up appearing across all nine seasons of “The Office”..

The Office wanted to incorporate guest stars without overshadowing the show’s talent

In the interview with Vulture, writer and producer Halsted Sullivan also chimed in. He referred to the act of “stunt casting” — making a splashy celebrity casting specifically to generate publicity for the show. He pointed out that it was a popular move at the time, but they didn’t want to play along. “‘The Office’ always shied away from stunt casting,” he said. “At the time, ‘Will & Grace’ would have someone like Cher or J.Lo on every episode, and the episode [would be] about that person.”

The main fear was setting a precedent where every episode needed a “cameo celebrity” who would inadvertently distract from the already impressive lineup of regular talent on the show. “What we didn’t wanna do is have some stunt casting … and say like, ‘Oh, you’re gonna get Jack Black every week if you tune in.’ So, instead we had Jack Black and Jessica Alba in that standalone movie … They were in the show, but at the same time, at no point did our characters get outshone by these big movie stars.”

“Stress Relief” remains one of the most popular and best episodes of “The Office” to date. But the strategy of generally avoiding celebrity cameos was clearly a success, as the series didn’t need to rely on A-listers for its remaining four seasons … even if James Spader stuck around as Robert California for all of Season 8. For the most part, though, “The Office” forged its own path with its pre-established characters, and even contributed some new additions to Hollywood’s premier talent pool along the way.
