28 Days Later 4K Release Cuts One of the Movie’s Scariest Scenes

The all-new 28 Days Later 4K Ultra HD Steelbook edition is now out. It appears that the new release is missing one of the film’s heart-pounding moments. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released this limited edition of the 2002 horror film on September 1, 2026.

A fan @hxll_mxtt spotted the change and shared a clip comparing the two versions on X. “Bizarrely, the new 28 Days Later 4K release is missing one of the most terrifying shots of the movie,” they wrote. “The infected hitting the back of the taxi during the tunnel chase and the close-up of the eyes. Instead, it’s a quick cut to the next shot.”

The excluded shot comes midway through the film during the dark tunnel sequence. Jim, Selena, Frank, and Hannah stop when their car tires burst. A horde of fast-moving, bloodthirsty infected soon closes in on them. In the original movie, an infected monster slams into the back of the cab. The scene then cuts to a terrifying close-up of its blood-red, furious eyes. The new edition appears to skip that sequence.

Online reaction has not been positive, with one fan @Ft13thB asking, “Why would they not show that part?” which is considered one of the scariest shots. Another @MattMurdcock67 wrote, “I wanna support physical media but getting mediocre re-releases that mess with the original film is not what I want.”

What to know about Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later

Danny Boyle-directed 28 Days Later is a British post-apocalyptic horror film, written by Academy Award winner Alex Garland.

The R-rated film follows Jim (Cillian Murphy), a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma to find London deserted after a deadly virus outbreak destroys society. Joined by other survivors played by Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson, and Megan Burns, they seek refuge from the infected.

Other supporting roles include Christopher Eccleston, Noah Huntley, Stuart McQuarrie, Ricci Harnett, and Leo Bill.

The 112-minute movie was released in US theaters on June 27, 2003, and became a huge hit. The film grossed $82 million. Its success led to various sequels, including 28 Weeks Later, 28 Years Later, and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Sony confirmed that a third 28 Years Later film is in development, with Danny Boyle directing and Alex Garland writing.

Fans can catch the new SteelBook edition on Amazon.
