A Continued Battle for Freedom in Revolutionary Haiti

Triumph To Tragedy, Book Four: The Clash of Pétion & Christophe by Daniel J.D. Bayard

“Readers will feel as though they’ve taken a step through time to truly experience the ambiance of this period of Haitian history.”

“Freedom is born from the resilience of those who dare to dream.”

Triumph To Tragedy Book Four: The Clash of Pétion & Christophe by Daniel J.D. Bayard is an entertaining and enlightening novel that reveals the secret lives of some of Haiti’s greatest revolutionary figures.

As the fourth book in Bayard’s Triumph To Tragedy series, this book continues to follow the Bayard family alongside historical characters after the dawn of a new, free Ayiti — but the battle for freedom is still far from over.

    Aftermath of Revolution

In the aftermath of a tumultuous revolution, following the death of his mentor, Toussaint Louverture, Commander Jean-Jacques Dessalines has taken up the mantle as the country’s leader. A former slave turned revolutionary leader, Dessalines rules Ayiti with an iron fist, butchering the remaining French white citizens and furthering the island’s racial tension.

After Dessalines’ fall on his ascension to power, tensions rise between his two most notable generals: Henry Christophe and Alexandre Pétion. As the two men grapple for power, the nation becomes further divided between North and South.

Meanwhile, Jean-Baptiste Bayard, the series’ principal protagonist, who’s managed to create a prosperous life for his family amid the years’ chaos, becomes once again drawn into the crossfire.

In this story riddled with political intrigue, where secret schemes lurk in the shadows, what will become of the nation of Ayiti? In their pursuit of peace and stability, will these great leaders lose their humanity?

    Political Intrigue Meets Historical Retellings

“To be great is to stand alone. To be magnificent is to be despised.”

Triumph To Tragedy reads as an authentic recording of history in the form of creative storytelling, educating readers on the personal lives of these historical figures as well as the greater Haitian culture. Readers will feel as though they’ve taken a step through time to truly experience the ambiance of this period of Haitian history.

Triumph To Tragedy is not only a tale of great men — including their personal flaws alongside their grand achievements — but also of the great women who stood beside them.

Marie-Claire Dessalines, Marie-Louise Christophe, Marie-Madeleine “Joute” Lachenais. Like many great women of history, their names are often overshadowed by those of their husbands. But author Daniel J.D. Bayard gives voice to their stories, revealing the power and influence they held over not only their husbands, but an entire nation. Triumph To Tragedy is perfect for anyone interested in Haitian history — or just good old-fashioned historical dramas. With four books in the series and another on the way, there’s plenty here for readers to sink their teeth into.

    About Daniel J.D. Bayard:

Daniel J.D. Bayard was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and raised in the United States when his parents moved to New York in 1958. He returned to Haiti for the first time at 18 and has been fascinated with Haiti’s culture, people, and historical significance ever since. He briefly lived and owned a business in Haiti and came to love it.

While researching his family’s ancestors dating back to the 17th century, he became intrigued with the complexities and drama of St. Domingue, the colonial precursor to the Republic of Haiti. In-depth research into the period’s history and colonial society made him write this thrilling, enlightening, and entertaining story.

Chief Marketing Officer for a major company, Mr. Bayard is an upstanding family man, he takes great pride in his four wonderful children and is also fortunate enough to be a doting grandfather to five beautiful grandchildren. Currently, he calls the sunny state of South Florida his home.
